The weekly pregnancy email update I get from our local hospital had a question about weight gain and baby size - the question asker stated that she had gained "a lot" of weight and wondered if that meant she was having a big baby. The answer given was that there is some correlation, but not a lot, and that women who gain 35 - 40 lbs. will have 6 to 7 lb babies.
I thought this kind of odd, b/c everything else this hospital has sent says that weight gain should be between 25 and 40 lbs., and that average size of baby is 7.5 lbs. So how is it that someone who gains the maximum of what is recommended (40 lbs), on average has a baby that is *smaller* than the norm by 1 and 1/2 to 1/2 a pound?
I'm at 38 weeks, 30 lb. weight gain - *everyone* tells me I look small and like I have gained no weight, in fact many people have suggested that I'm still in my 2nd tri. I'm wondering if this means the babe will likely be small, even though my weight gain is well within normal range? (My MW doesn't do weight estimates b/c she doesn't do sonograms - so I have no predictions of size).
So ... since so many of the Jan mamas already have their outside baby, I was wondering if you'd be willing to share what your final weight gain was, and what the size of your baby was for a little completely unofficial study on the matter?
Re: Outside Baby XP: Weight Gain and Baby Size
PS- my skinny friend gained 20 and had a 6lb, 10oz baby and my overweight freind gained 10 and had an 8lb baby. Another average weight, fit friend gained 40 and had a 7lb, 13 oz baby.
Go figure!
I gained 40lbs and DD was 6lbs 10oz. This time I am up 50+ lbs, and I have an u/s tomorrow to GUESStimate how big this baby is going to be.
This girl at my church was overweight pre-pregnancy and gained a total of 19 lbs. She had a 10lbs baby. However, my college roommate gained about 80lbs and had an 8lbs 14oz baby. I think it depends on a lot of factors.
Let me also add that my mom never gained more than 5 lbs with any of her kids (she always lost weight due to severe MS). She is very petite, and all of us were between 6lbs and 7lbs.

I had my lo on 12-17-10 and was still down 6 lbs on 12-16-10. She weighed 6lbs. 8oz. Now at almost 3 weeks after her birth i'm down 30lbs. So just after delivering her and all the fluid and everything thats 24 lbs gone. I was quite shocked when i stepped on the scale at the doctors office today.
