Trying to love a name..

My husband has his heart set on the name Luke William, I like it, but not sure I love it yet. I really wanted the middle name to be Matthew after DH, but Luke Matthew is a little too biblical for me (yes DH is a pastor but I don't want to go overboard!) Anyway, what are your opinions on Luke?? Do you think of a loogie? Or Luke Skywalker? Up until now, I'd been wanting Bennett but I don't think I'll be getting my way. He's just so excited about Luke!

  • I don't think of anything when I think of Luke.  Maybe a few people I knew grewing up but I definately don't think of loogie.  And fwiw, I don't think Luke Matthew sounds too biblical but if you do, you could try Lucas Matthew but call him Luke.

  • Keep in mind that you probably won't be calling your son by his first and middle name all the time.

My suggestion would be the compromise of Luke Matthew. It's the name your DH loves and the name you love. Who cares if it sounds biblical? DH is a pastor, so why not name your son towards something his Dad does? I think it's a great name.

I couldn't decide on a name for my son till I was about 7 months along. I was watching Highlander with my Dad and heard the name Connor. Loved it. My Dad's middle name is Morgan and since I was going through a divorce at the time and my soon to be ex was never around. My Dad went with me to my OB appts and was in the OR when Connor was born. So Connor Morgan it was. He and my Dad have been best friends since then....he's 9 now.

If you're trying to love a name then you're trying to make something into something it isn't. Find a name you and your DH love from your hearts then it will just 'fit'.

  • Luke is actually our boy name we decided on.  (My sister actually tried to barter with me for it when she found out she was having a boy.)  I really like it and it's meaning.  But for me, the meaning of names is as important as the name itself.    Luke Bennett is a really nice name too!

  • I know what you mean, we vetoed Calvin early on because it meant "bald" But Luke means light bringer and Bennett means little blessed one. I think if we use Luke, we'll save Bennett for the next :-)

  • I like Luke a lot.  After we picked Rory I loved it and then started to doubt myself... it's such a big thing to name a person!  The more I hear it and write it (or see it written- my cousin got my some burp clothes with Rory on them), the more I love it.  I would do as other suggested- if you love Matthew, use it for a middle name!  I didn't think "Bible" when I read it...

  • Our boy's name is going to be Luke Robert (Robert is my husband's first name).  Luke was one of those names that we both liked, but it wasn't our top choice.  However, my husband did not like my top choice (Nolan) at all, and I didn't like his top choice (Garrett) at all, so we decided on Luke.  Now that I've been calling him Luke for a few weeks, I can't think of him as anything but Luke.  It will grow on you.

  • Hoorah, pastor's wives unite! That being said, I totally didn't think Luke Matthew was too Biblical when I read it either. You want to love the name. Maybe give it another month and see if it feels closer to your heart. Luckily you have some time on your side but Luke William, Luke Matthew and Luke Bennett all sound great to me! Remember...you really don't use the full name too often too so that should help bring off a little pressure :)

  • I know what you mean about just loving it! We had a name for a while but just didn't LOVE it. Someone told me that you typically go with the first name you thought of when you started discussing names. I like pp's suggestion about just calling the baby by the name for a while. That's what we're doing. IMO, Luke is a very cute name. I've had a Luke and a Lucas at school and both of them were precious.

  • That's pretty funny! We are planning to name our little man Lucas William.. but I'm sure it'll turn into Luke at some point. I personally love the name... it's very boy and simple. As my mom says.. it's a good sturdy name. I think once you meet your little boy you'll know if it works or not. GL!!

  • I like Luke william, Luke Matthew and Lucas William or Matthew. I don't think it sounds too biblical either. I think all would be great names. Good Luck!
  • I don't think Luke Matthew is too biblical. Both are well known names and don't make me think of the Bible immediately.
