Ugh - got my progesterone results today from 7dpo, it was 8.8. My ob/gyn says that it's ovulatory but too low, so I asked about progesterone supplements. They said no, and that they generally up the dose of clomid to get higher progesterone levels. Does this seem right to anyone else? This is my first cycle of clomid with this doctor, and I also wasn't being monitored. Should I push for monitoring by her or seek out a RE? I have been holding off on the RE thus far because it will be OOP... but I feel like they're not looking out for my health! I am not sure if I am over reacting and just feeling frustrated. Any opinions? Thanks for letting me vent!
Re: Frustrated!!
I feel like I could have written this exact post. My progesterone levels were 7.7 and 7dpo. I am also going through my obgyn. When I pushed her about the low levels, she didnt seem like it was a big deal - but from what I have researched, that is low. When I asked, she said they could put me on clomid, but that wouldn't be for a while.
I am about to switch to an RE as well, even though it will be OOP, because I feel like we might get more "in tune" care.
You know whats funny, my obgyn "prescribed" the same treatment - to put me on clomid. I haven't looked too much into it yet, but it is supposed to strengthen you ovulation, which I guess strengthens your progesterone levels??? I thought it was a bit odd when she said that, but I will definitely bring it up when we move to an RE.
Curious if other girls have had the same thing.
I think Clomid increases progesterone levels by increasing the number of follicles you produce, and the follicles are what produce the progesterone. So if you have more, your progesterone is higher. But I agree with others, if you aren't happy with the OB, go with an RE. They are much better at dealing with all this, and have more experience with the different options. If all your OB knows is Clomid, that's all they are going to be comfortable prescribing. GL!

I have PCOS and am also annovulatory. I do not know how low my progesterone was prior to Clomid. After taking 50 mg the first month my level was 8.8. After 100 mg of Clomid the second month my progesterone level went down to 7. RE did progesterone supplements. I am awaiting the third test after increasing the clomid to 150 mg.
I really do not know the specifics, but I do know with a low progesterone if you do get pregnant it can cause you to miscarry.
I would definitely see a RE. I started out with an OB/GYN who also did not do any monitoring. We did the first round of clomid with her and she did no testing. You'll be able to learn more about your body by seeing a RE and having the appropriate testing done. Good luck!
