I came across this website when my co-workers and I were having a debate of the difference between a Jacket & Coat (long story lol).. and i thought you gals would enjoy this little tid bit ![]()

I thought this was interesting! Especially the comments below about the die off pattern..
Re: Difference between Jr. & II (LIP)
hmmm.. that was pretty interesting!!
I'm actually more curious about the jacket/coat conversation now though...lol

I always thought the same as the second post on there (Jr becomes II if he names his son the ___ ___ III)
I have no idea what the other poster is talking about that the father of a Jr. can't use the title Sr. Even a quick google search found people going back 100s of years named Sr.
haha, basically i work in a hospital and when we check in patients we write a short description to cut down on yelling out the name, like if theres one person wearing a red shirt they can just walk over to the person and say, Are you Mr. John?? Instead of doing like a cattle call lol
ANYWAYS, i always hesitate when i write jacket or coat because i'm not sure what they technically are.. or if it didn't matter.. so i asked my 2 co-workers
I always thought a "jacket" was more formal, like a blazer or such.. and when i think coat i think like a nylon water proof type of thing...
coworker 1 (woman in her 40's) thought opposite of me, coats are long and formal (like a trenchcoat, pea coat) and jackets are short nylon informal things
coworker 2 (man in his 40's) said you guys are crazy they are the same thing and it doesn't matter...
so i googled (can you tell we had a slow day?!) and came up with this.. so we were all kinda right in our own way, depending on which decade you looked at haha
thats the coat vs jacket story!
Ditto for my dad and grandfather. But my dad isn't a junior - never went by it, no one has called him that.
