Infertility

IVFers need to ask a question, really hard

I am due to start lupron in my first IVF cycle next month. However I am a little worried about it not happening at all now. This is really hard I don't tell many people about this but since you guys have been there for me I will try to finish typing this without deleting it. Ok I am rambling here.....I have genital herpes I was raped and this is a byproduct. Anyway I have been so worried over cycling I have an outbreak now and I had one last month too. I am worried that this will mean a cancellation of my cycle, am I right? TIA

Re: IVFers need to ask a question, really hard

  • I'm so sorry that you're dealing with that.  I also applaud you for asking a hard question.  I hope you don't delete it because I'm sure there are other girls out there who would love to know the same thing but are too scared to ask.

I don't know the answer to your question.  Have you talked to your doctor about how your situation will influence your IVF schedule?  He should tell you exactly what will cause your cycle to be canceled before you get started (in regards to outbreaks).  That way you won't be stressing without reason.  I hope you can get some good answers and I hope you get to go through with your cycle.  Hang in there and good luck!!!

  • i don't know if this is possible......but i know someone who takes valtrax daily to prevent outbreaks........perhaps talk to your OB to start you on this ASAP because number one, it will make the outbreak last a much shorter period of time and number two, should prevent another outbreak from happening. i think if you can get this under control with some meds (which i believe are safe to take while pg) then you should be just fine. Call the OB first thing tomorrow.........in the meantime feel better?

  • Ok, valtrex is category C as far as being able to continue taking it. The safe version while pg is called?acylovir. This is a category B drug which is much safer and studies have been done to show that the risks are really minimal..........mention this to your dr and hopefully your cycle wll go on as planned!?

  • I just want to tell you that I am so sorry you're dealing with this and I applaud your bravery to ask the question.  You are an amazing woman!  I would talk to your RE and see what they recommend.

    ((HUGS))

  • Oh hon, I am so sorry.  I do not know the answer to your question but it seems that there should be some way to work through this and continue with your cycle.  Big, big hugs.

  • I'm so sorry you have to deal with this on top of IF.  I give you much support and so much credit for being open and honest with us.  I agree with pp who brought up Valtrex.  I don't see why you couldn't take that at least during an outbreak.  I would definitely call your RE and see what he says.  I don't see why a break out should impede you starting Lupron.  I wish you the best!!

  • I'm so sorry for you - what a horrible thing to deal with.  I searched for IVF and herpes, and came up with these links:

    https://www.healthboards.com/herpes/853.html

https://avainfertility.blogspot.com/2005_08_01_archive.html (It states: If you have a history of genital herpes infection, you must report any pre-herpes symptoms, active lesions or healing herpes lesions. The occurrence of any of these stages in either the male or the female will require cessation of the IVF treatment.)

Although the net says this, you can't always believe everything you read on the net.  Best thing to do is contact your RE.

    Best of luck!!

  • I'm sorry I don't have an answer for you, and I am sorry you have to deal with worrying about this on top of everything else, but I applaud your honesty and sincerely hope you don't have to cancel.  I hope that maybe just talking about it will help you feel better and that will assist in the outbreak lasting a shorter amount of time?  Please try to take care of yourself.

  • I don't have much info for you on teh herpes front - I know you would have to have a c-section though. I just wanted to reach out to you and tell you I know just how hard it is to deal with IF due to rape. I was raped my freshman year in college. It put my life on hold completely. I was tested for STDs directly after and they found nothing. Fast forward 2 years, just after DH and I started dating and I became sick. They found out I actually had chlamydia - the docs said my body, in an attempt to protect me from what it could not flush out, built a cell wall around it. When I became sick, i was in a great deal of pain - they beleive that was the cell wall "breaking" and letting out the "bad" cells. We've known since day 1 of my infertility due to the extreme damage it causes on your tubes, etc.

It took me a long time to finally open up and talk about the rape - it was a date rape and it made me very confused. If you ever need to talk at all, I feel once I finally did reach out to my close friends and family and talk about what happened, I was able to cope with it easier. You are definitely not alone, unfortunately, this is a club none of us ever want to join, but it's a very large club.

Hang in there! If you ever need/want to talk - sweetie to klod @ gmail.com

  • I'm so sorry you had that experience and that you are dealing with this now. No advice, but I assume your RE knows about this. Does he seem concerned for your cycle?

    *hugs*

I'm so so sorry.  I agree that I would contact your RE immediately.

This is just a horribel situation.  My ehart goes out to both you and Hope&Love.  No one should ever have to endure as much heartache as you two ladies have.  Take care.

  • Acyclovir is wonderful.  Somebody I know  has been taking it for 8 years.  They have only had 2 or 3 outbreaks during this time and it is when they missed taking it.  You will probably have to cancel a cycle if you have an active outbreak.  Your outbreak might be over by the time you begin your IVF cyclle.  Good luck.
  • I just wanted to say how sorry I am that something like that happened to you and you are a very strong woman.  I would talk to your RE and see if they can give you something.

  • hi there-

I had a herpes "scare" a couple of months ago and had spoken with both my RE and my OB/GYN about how it would affect my IF treatments if I did have herpes. Neither said it would be a problem with cycling, but that if I were pregnant, I would be put on Valtrex at week 36 so that there would be no outbreaks during delivery. If you happen to have an outbreak at delivery, they would perform a c-section.

If you haven't told your RE yet about your dx though, you should definitely let him/her know now though.

    big hugs to you~

  • I wish I had an answer for you but I have no idea if it would mean a cancellation of your cycle.  I would definitely talk to your RE about how you can handle this.  I'm sure they will give you options and help you find one that you're comfortable with.  I'm not at the IVF stage...I wish I could be more helpful.

And hon, I'm so sorry about the trauma you experienced.  I went through something very similiar so I understand the emotional fallout.  I think it's very courageous of you to post this here and please don't delete it...I think you'll find that other nesties will totally support you and I'm sure IVFer's will give you the best of their knowledge about this.

Page me any time if you want to talk.  ((( BIG HUGS )))
