Question for the veterans- when will my clothes stop fitting?

Hi all,

I'm only at 5 weeks now (so I know I have a long way to go), but I'm in extreme planning mode. I have a question. When will expect my clothes to stop fitting? I'm a small woman to begin with, size 4-5, ~125lbs.

What will expand first? Boobs? Belly?

I'm sure this differs from person to person, but I'd love it if you could share your experiences!

I'm going to try to make or repurpose as much as I possibly can. I'll certainly post patterns and tips when I get farther along (in many ways)...

  • I used a rubber band on my pants for a while (no belly band for me! it worked great!), but by 12 weeks I was in maternity pants & they were so comfortable.  I didn't really pop until I was about 17 weeks.  I remember thinking I did before that & then I really popped & wow, did you notice then.  LOL!  Boob wise I never changed too too much.  Like you said though that is person to person... pregnancy to pregnancy.  A friend of mine, this is her first, said her boobs a HUGE!  She is pretty set in that area as it is so I can't wait to see her next time she is in the state.   This time around, I feel enormous already.  The Bloat is terrible.  I am fine in the morning but at night my jeans are just way too tight.  I think I will be breaking out my yoga pants early.

  • Everyone is different. With DS I wore my regular pants until around 14 weeks, but I needed a bigger bra almost immediately.  I am skinny too and I usually wear a size 3 and I was a maternity size large when I delivered. My advice- shop as you go. Get a bella band. Don't buy too much too soon- get a few essentials, and when you need something in particular (like a dress for a special occasion, etc) buy it at the last minute.

i bought alot of empire waisted stuff and sun dresses cause they would grow with me but to be honest, my jeans fit me all throughout pregnancy. its all about how you are built and how baby grows. i would advise to get long tank tops to layer with and a bella band to start out with. i get all my tanks at the buckle.

  • There is no way to predict this.  A lot of it also depends on what you wear now.  I wear a lot of low rise jeans and looser tops, and I wasn't fully in maternity clothes with my first until around 20 weeks.  I really only gained in the stomach last time (and unfortunately the feet...my feet went up by half a size).  This time, my boobs have already increased dramatically.  Just start shopping now so you aren't caught off guard when you wake up one day and realize your pants won't button.
  • A lot of my pants are already feeling tight around the waist because of bloat! I need  invest in a belly band for sure. My sister just gave me a huge box of maternity clothes and I may end up wearing some of those early just to avoid going and spending lots on "transition" clothes. We'll see!!

  • Well, with DD#1 I had to get a bigger bra at about 10 weeks or so...I didn't need to wear maternity pants until about 12 weeks but I am looking super forward to wearing them this time around because they are just so dang comfy!!

  • I'm 5'7, 130-135 prepreg.

With DD- I was in a bella band around 12 weeks and maternity pants full time around 15-16 weeks I think.  I went up 1 cup size around mid pregnancy.  Maternity shirts were in the 20's.

With this one, my pants are fine in the am and need a bella band for my jeans by the end of the afternoon/night. (I'm 11 weeks).  I am rocking the yoga pants as much as I can though on my days off.  I go back to work (im a teacher) in a few days and I am sure none of my dress pants will fit without a bella band.

  • It varies a ton and is ultimately not terribly possible to control.  With DS #1 I was in mat clothes full time by 8 weeks.  It was also an IVF pregnancy so I was quite bloated from meds to begin with.  I have no idea what to expect this time, but so far (though it is early) no bloating or anything yet.

  • Last time, I was able to wear my regular pants for a long time - I was almost 20 weeks started wearing maternity pants.  BUT, I was not a skinny girl by any means, and I hardly gained any weight up until that point, so I think that my weight was just shifting around, which let me get away with my old clothes for awhile longer.  I did start wearing maternity shirts around 15 weeks or so mostly because they were just more comfortable and I didn't feel stuffed into my regular clothes.

Now this time, I am super-bloated and my boobs feel huge already.  If I didn't feel like I was under a microscope at work and that people would find out before I want them to know, I'd probably start wearing a few maternity shirts now just to be comfortable.

All of that being said (and ignoring what I just said about my microscope situation), I always go by the rule of wearing what's comfortable.  If you want to rock a belly band or even comfy maternity jeans now, go for it!

  • I also did the rubber band trick on my jeans.  I had to quit wearing my jeans around 18 weeks with my first and that is just because they get so unfomfortable with the zipper digging into you.  I wear dress pants during the week to work and I just wear them unbuttoned or folded down.  I wear a cami everyday and they help to keep my pants up.  WIth my first I was still able to do this with my dress pants up until around 36-37 weeks.  I wore regular shirts the entire pregnancy, if I would buy new I would just buy a size up.  I was pregnant over the winter so my sweaters fit just fine, just a little shorter than before.  I think I only ended up buying 2 pair of jeans, 5 pair of dress pants, and a few actual maternity shirts.  Emprire waist tops were big last time around, so I would just find them on clearance since I would only wear them for a few months anyway.  I'm hoping I get by this time.

My boobs never got any bigger until my milk came in after I gave birth.

  • Thanks so much for all of the awesome advice! I'm definitely going to get (or make) a band ASAP so I'm prepared when the day arrives. You ladies are great!

  • I used the hair band trick and Bella band sporadically when the bloat was really bad.  The bloat really seemed to vary w/the day for a few weeks.  Around week 10, I started needing the Band all the time.  I started wearing my maternity pants but w/most of my regular, non-fitted shirts.  I agree that it seems to just depend on the person and their build. I'm very short-torsoed and haven't gained any weight so far, but have "popped".

  • With my first pregnancy it wasn't until after 20 weeks that I started wearing maternity jeans. This time around I don't know but it varies from person to person.
