Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Gagging while eating, kind of concerned

E is sick and for the past couple days has had no appetite.  I am talking, all he had today was yogurt (the yotoddler ones), half a cracker and ONE morning star chicken nugget.  I was so excited that he was eating the "chicken" I could have cried.  Anywho, he kept on gagging like it was hard for him to swallow. At one point he gagged so badly that I started panicking and then he started crying and he would eat nothing else.  It could be that he is just sick and has post nasal drip or excess mucus or that his thoat hurts.

But I am terrified that is throat is closing or something. Embarrassed  Does this happen to anyone elses' lo's when they are sick?

Otherwise, he looks fine, is drinking lots of fluids so I am not concerned about that.

  • Sounds like he's just off his feed from being sick. Poor kid. :(

  • yes, this happened the other day with P...she would only eat purees.  i think her throat hurt and with all of the mucous she couldn't chew and swallow.  hope he feels better.

  • DD had a really bad cold about a month ago and she threw up everytime she ate... not because her stomach was upset but because she would choke on her food due to a combination of the mucous, coughing, and her reflux. It was really scary! We stuck to applesauce and yogurt until she was better!

  • Yes, when DS has bad colds with lots of mucus, he barely eats.  Yesterday he only wanted to drink and eat soft foods.  I wouldn't worry if your LO is drinking fine.  The food might taste weird or his throat might be sore from mucus.
DS born 8/8/09 and DD born 6/12/12.
  • I agree with the sore throat theory. My little guy had mono and his throat was AWFUL. He wasn't eating and when he did he would gag on things like applesauce.  He just hurt him to swallow.  Hope your babe feels better!
