Moms who will be using formula

I plan on using formula for our baby when he is born.  I saw the commercial on tv about store brand formula and how it is exactly the same because of the regulations that the FDA have in place. (It's in the link below)  I did some research and I plan on conferring with my pediatrician before making a final decision, but I was wondering how many moms will be using store brand formula for their little ones.

  • Most store brand items are the exact same as name brand things. I'd say look at the label next time you are there. You're likely to find the same ingredients in both.

  • We'll probably try BJ's brand (I think it's compared to Enfamil) again since it worked with ds.  I hope it works with this little guy because it's a 3lb can for $20!

  • Same thing! We like Target brand over anything else!
  • For DD, we had to use lactose free - Similac Sensitive.  So I may just stick with that this time around to save us all a lot of frustration in case DS is also lactose intolerant.  Either that or Gentlease.  I'm not sure if there is a lactose free store brand?

  • you are right most store brands are extremely similar to name brands, however, I go by what my pedi recommends and what she gets at the hosptial.  My daughter used Enfamil Ready To Feed.  There is totally nothing wrong with using the store brand stuff...but its like any other formula you have to see how the baby does on it :)

FYI - BJ's seems to have discontinued their Berkeley & Jensen formula that compares to Enfamil (yellow label) but they still have the one that compares to Similac (blue label).  [Edit: At least at my local BJ's - I haven't researched it to see if they stopped making it or just don't carry it at my store.]

DS was on BJ's yellow label but that was 4 years ago. DD is now on BJ's blue label with no issue so far. We used the Similac RTF bottles in the hospital and in the diaper bag and she seems to be fine switching between the two.

We used the Target version of Similac Sensitive and it worked great for us.  You just have to be sure that you are comparing two things that are supposed to be alike.
  • We will be after we use the free sample Similac just sent us. We will use the Target brand. We used Target brand with DD and never had any issues with it.

  • We used Sam's Club brand for #1, except for when we got once a month coupons for the Walmart brand.

Good to know!  It's been awhile since we bought formula so have no idea if our BJ's discontinued the yellow label too.  If so we'll probably try the blue label then

  • That is our plan, for sure. I'm just going to compare lables and hopefully save a little money in this area.

  • so glad to see i am not the only one formula feeding!  i will probably start her on similac because that is what the hispital gives then switch to store brand and see how she does.

  • With DS #1, I used Target brand formula and the pedi said that it was exactly the same.  In fact, I liked it better because Enfamil made more bubbles when you shook it up and I think it made DS's gas worse.  So I highly recommend Target brand!
  • We used Target brand too, and liked it just fine.  I intend to use it again this time.  In fact, I better start stocking up!

  • For DD#1 we used Parent's Choice (from Walmart) - it has the same ingredients as Enfamil.  So that's the plan for this new little one on the way.  I think the Target brand would be just fine too; DH works right across the street from a Walmart though, so it is really easy for me to let him know when we are running low on formula & he'll just stop by & pick some more up! :)

  • I plan to nurse and also formula feed. I was at Costco and compared the Similac to the Kirkland brand. They had the exact same ingredients but the Similac was smaller and labout 35.00 compared to the other which was bigger and only 17.00.

I always buy generic..if baby can tolerate the store brand formula I'll definately use it.
