I think we like the nickname Benji but need some honest feedback. I actually like Benji better than Benjamin but know we would have to give him a formal name.
I'm not a fan, personally--i think of the dog. But I do know a Benjamin who was called Benji all through school and then Ben in the professional world.
Honestly, I think it's pretty awful, sounds horribly unsophisticated, childish and is a demeaning choice of nickname for such a strong, masculine name like Benjamin. It's definitely not for me.

I probably wouldn't have put it quite so harshly, but I do actually agree with all of this. That, plus the whole dog-name coorelation is just too much. Sorry.
Our little one is Benjamin and the only way my husband would agree to name him that is if I promised to never call him Benji! I don't mind the nickname for a little boy, but I obviously don't get to use it!
I knew a boy who went by Benji, so I don't think it's bad at all. I still think of the dog, but it's not too bad. Chances are, his schoolmates won't even know who Benji is anyway (the dog, that is).
I think it's fine, but I might be biased since we have a Benji. DH would only agree to the name if we could call him Benji when he was little. Turns out we call him that Benj, Benjamin and Ben. Whatever comes out. I love the name Benjamin and it has so many options and it sound professional when older.

I can't stop picturing the dog either.

All this and it reminds me of a dog
I agree.
I think it's just fine as a nickname, but agree that Benjamin is a stronger first name.
To me, it sounds pretty cool.
