Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

SAHM-question about tv...

DS is either sick, getting several teeth, or both. Either way, he has been pretty miserable the last few days. The only thing he wants to do is watch tv....that is the only thing that makes him happy right now. He does not want to play, etc...so I have been letting him watch tv more than usual ( a couple hours!)

Am I creating a monster/starting a bad habit?

How much tv do you let LO watch? In general, I am finding it hard to fill my day with activities for him and I feel like we both get bored and I have just been resorting to letting him watch some tv cause it makes him happy. I feel like a bad mom...

Re: SAHM-question about tv...

  • Our LO doesn't watch TV, but it's on all day, she could care-a-less and totally ignores it.

  • If a kiddo is sick, anything goes! The true test takes place when they are well. You are is cold territory right now so your outdoor activities are limited. When I am off during the summer (I teach), I try to hook up w/ friends w/ toddlers daily just to keep Cam (and me!) entertained. Are there any local playgroups in your area? That might be a great place to start. =)

Ditto. DD and DH have been fighting something for over a week- high fevers, cough, etc. She's watched a lot of TV and had chocolate chip cookies yesterday after she threw up because it was the only thing she wanted and there was nothing in her stomach. If they're sick you kind of have to do what you have to do to get through it- I say when her fever breaks 101 whatever fluids, foods, entertainment I can get her to enjoy is a win.

  • We do the same thing. Although my DS is younger, it hasnt caused any bad habits (yet). On a normal non-sick day, we keep it to 1-2 episodes of shows he likes, so anywhere between 20-40 minutes.

In terms of activities to keep you both entertained, could you join some playgroups to get him out of the house? Storytime at the library? Do you have any children's museums/indoor play centers that you could get a pass to so you could go a few times a week? Buy some new toys to keep his attention instead of the TV?

I'm a New Englander too, and winter sucks.

  • if they're sick I would probably let it slide. My LO has never watched tv, I keep it on and watch a show for myself (nothing inappropriate) for about an hour in the evening while she plays in my room and she totally ignores it.
  • My son has always watched tv, I have it on every minute we're home, and I don't care how much he watches. At 18 mo he could count to 20, say some words in chinese and spanish, says "please & thank you" all day long, and knows the difference between a brontosaurus & tyranasaurus rex. Since I sure as sh*t didn't teach that all to him, I have DJ Lance, Kai Lan, Dora, and Dino Dan to thank for that.

We are literally out of the house every day from 8:30a-1p then he naps from 1:30-3:30-4p so he really watches mainly from 4ish-7p when he goes to bed (while playing- the tv is in my sunroom where his toys are set up).

He can probably identify Jax, Brenda and Sonny from GH too but that's all me.

Do what you feel like doing with the tv. Some kids love it, some don't care...but it isn't the devil.
