Noob- feedback on crib vs. pack'n play.

So my DH and I will remain in our small apartment for a while due to financial restrictions. We live in a very expensive city and things haven't turned out well for us the past few months. We haven't complained to anyone about that.  My in-laws believe we should just use a pack'n play given to us by friends for the baby to sleep in and don't understand why we want to buy a crib. My heart is set on a crib, but every time we talk baby things, they're all like "well, it's stupid to buy a crib, he doesn't need it," and "we have a bouncer, why don't you take it." I understand it's not malicious, but it gets on my pregnant nerves a lot. They're kind of pushy and I'm not good at saying "I hate this bouncer, thanks for offering but i don't want it." What do I do? I tried very nicely to decline their stuff, but it seems they keep pushing we take them. I have a small place, and I'm not the cleanest or most organized, but man, I don't want a million colors in my place. I'm sticking to a theme on purpose and I want my baby to have a crib to sleep in. Am i being unreasonable?

  • What's the issue? If you want the crib buy the crib, it's not their decision. As for unwanted stuff.. just tell them you are all set and have or will have everything you need.

There are lots of affordable cribs out there so I say buy a crib if you want a crib.  PNPs aren't the most comfortable thing for babies to sleep in, especially when they outgrow the bassinet feature.  You could also purchase a mini-crib which are smaller and less expensive than full-size standard cribs.

There is nothing wrong with declining free items if you don't want or need them.  Just make sure you don't spend more than you can afford buying the items you do want to buy.

  • Ditto what's been said- buy a crib. And when they offer their stuff, just say you don't need it or you'd prefer for it to stay at their house for when your LO visits. If it stays there, then you won't have to lug yours over. Be gracious and say no thank you with a smile. You don't have to tell them you have one planned, you don;t have to tell them why you want a crib or baby things in certain colors, etc.

I have a travel swing I bought to match my living room and wouldn't have wanted one in bright pink or anything like that, so I can understand you.

  • I say buy a crib! My dad and his gf actually were bugging me about the, "why do you want a crib?" thing. We have a small apartment and I wanted a crib so I got a crib. I have it on the other side of the room. I just know pack n plays aren't as comfortable and eventually baby will need to be in a crib. I actually have a travel lite pack n play that is smaller then a regular one. I plan on using the bassinet part of it when baby is born to be right next to me at night until I am comfortable and the cats are comfortable. Plus it will be nice to be able to drag it out into the living room in the middle of the night when my bf is asleep.

So I say get the crib you're gonna end up needing it anyway. :)

  • Buy a crib!!! If expense is the issue, you can put it on lay-away or go to craigslist and get one off there.

  • Hi ann - like everyone else said, (a) crib mattresses will be more comfortable than the pack n play, and (b) it's your baby and your decision, so go for the crib! We ended up getting both a crib and a PNP because we have the space for it and we'll be doing some traveling. I like Tiffany's advice on politely asking your in-laws to keep their things at their house for when the baby visits there. Good luck!

  • I would agree that you should look into a mini crib (porta crib) which is good for small spaces, and cheaper. There is a ton for under $100 on amazon.com and the beading is usually under $40 for these cribs! Good luck :)
