OK ladies, any suggestions for the book?  I was thinking that a good starting point would be an older classic - like a book that people always should/want to read but never do?

     Some that kind to mind:

    To Kill a Mockingbird
    Animal Farm
    Little Women
    The Good Earth
    The Secret Garden

    Other thoughts?

Of the classics listed, my vote would be for Little Women.

If we end up going the contemporary route, I just started The Magicians (I am only 30 pages in) and so far, it is really good! It has been described as a "modern day fantasy for grown ups". https://www.amazon.com/Magicians-Novel-Lev-Grossman/dp/0452296293/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1293658885&sr=8-1

Truthfully, I will read just about anything and don't mind what everyone decides on.

    oooh, this sounds really good!!

Yes, it does. And I just bought the Kindle edition while I was there. Big Smile

Me too! That is the only problem with the Kindle-- I have no control over myself when it comes to one-click shopping. Tongue Tied

  • I love this idea! I actually thought about posting something like this a while ago, but didn't know if it would fly on a TTGP board Stick out tongue

I haven't read any Sci-Fi, but I'm in for trying anything!

I'm in! I'm currently reading the book by Ryan Buell of Paranormal State but I can always start another one.

DH and I cant get enough of that show, is the book any good??

DH and I are PS addicts. The book is great so far but I'm only on page 5. Dam job getting in the way of my hobbies!

FyreFry - I vote for The Secret Garden. I read it when I was a kid but I'd love to read it again.

  • FyreFry5 -- I love your Gina & Gerry text. I originally had "saving you from stupid people, one day at a time" but then deleted it.

  • I'd like to join in.

I just finished Ender's Game, picking up Speaker for the Dead from the library tomorrow!  I will have to look into Hunger Games while I'm there too.

I used to have Secret Garden memorized, I can't believe so many people haven't read it.  I'd love to read it again.

I've also just finished reading My Sisters Keeper, and re-reading Harry Potter and the half blood Prince and Charlotte's Web.

  • I'm in! I love to read all kinds of books (sci fi and fantasy included!). I'd read anything that has been suggested so far. I love the Ender books, I read them years ago. I bought the first Hunger Game book and am excited to start reading it. Has anyone read the Outlander series? I'm also super excited that HBO is turning one of my favorite fantasy series into a TV show (A Game of Thrones). Does anyone like reading nonfiction? I try to intersperse nonfiction into my reading list and could use some good recommendations.

Yes to another Ender fan!  I wish I had heard of this series long ago.

What did you think of My Sister's Keeper?  I read 19 Minutes a couple years ago, and I thought it was alright but I don't think I'll read another Picoult.

More Yes to HP and Charlotte's Web.  I had never read CW until 2 years ago, when I read it aloud to my second graders.  They and I loved it!!

I do really want to read Secret Garden.  My sister and I were obsessed with the movie as kids (although I don't remember much about it now).

Sounds like a lot of people are into Hunger Games!  I wonder how similar it is to Ender's Game?

I try to read some NF also, but I have to be really interested in the topic.  I hate hate hate history (I can't even get through historical fiction), and the NF I read is usually related to my career (education), science, or a special few political/social issues that I take interest in.  What kind of NF have you read and liked?

Yes to another Ender fan!  I wish I had heard of this series long ago. Seriously!  MH has been holding out on me with the book recs!

What did you think of My Sister's Keeper?  I read 19 Minutes a couple years ago, and I thought it was alright but I don't think I'll read another Picoult.  I really liked it, but I have to agree with one of my teachers when she said she felt manipulated by reading it (and Picoult in general).  It's very obvious how she expects you to react to every twist in the book, so with her writing you just have to be "along for the ride" instead of actually thinking about what you are reading.

I do really want to read Secret Garden.  My sister and I were obsessed with the movie as kids (although I don't remember much about it now). I am probably going to read this again regardless of what the clubs first book is, MH actually bought me a new copy a few years ago, after seeing how badly my original copy weathered 20 years and 50+ readings, and I haven't read it yet.

  • I would love to do this!  I just got a Nook for Christmas, and I could use a few good books to read.  Not into Sci-Fi though.

  • Any other suggestions, ladies?
  • I missed this the first time.  I think a book club sounds like a great idea!  I love reading and I love sci-fi, but I haven't read much sci-fi lately.

The suggested list are all books I've read.  Of those, Little Women is my favorite. :)

We did a book club at work a few years ago and read a variety of books.  I think we started with The Bonesetters Daughter, which was pretty good.
