I just read this article on On Dee Doh about how the US is ranked terribly for how easy it is to be a mommy in a particular country. This made me really sad. Anyone want to move to Norway?

Re: So apparently the US sucks for mommies...
Yup! I grew up in Germany so this all is quite an adjustment for me.
Not only do you get to stay home for a year after having a baby, you also get paid for it! Family always comes first in Europe. I have family and friends all over Europe and I've been thinking about moving back quite a bit!
But there are other wonderful things about the US as well
Reading the article now, but I can tell you that working in a government sector as a civilian...we don't get maternity leave.
We have to save up our sick, vacation time and comp time to take time off for maternity leave and if we don't have enough time we either come back or we take leave without pay. SUCKS!
Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen. -Ephesians 4:29
By law I thought they don't have to pay you, but you can take up to 12 weeks off without penalty. Why would you have to you use your sick/vacation time? I signed up for disability insurance, and while I am out of work on maternity leave I will still get a chunk of my normal income.
You are correct...we can take up to 6-12 weeks off without losing our job and it would be completely unpaid. We use our sick/vacation/comp time in order to get paid during our maternity leave. We also have the opportunity to see if we can get donated vacation time from other's in the division/unit in order to have paid leave, but again that is after you have exhausted your paid time.
Needless to say, I have been working here since September 2009 and have saved up a bunch of my sick time and working on accumulating comp time as it is in order to have 6 weeks paid leave.
