Prenatal Vitamins

So, a month ago, I ran out of my prenatal vitamins that my doctor gave me a prescription for, Gesticare DHA.  I chose those because they were the cheapest on my insurance.  I went to refill them last month and the pharmacy told me a price that I was not expecting.  It was waaaaayyyy more than I paid the previous month.  I called the the insurance company and found out that Gesticare DHA is no longer a prefered medication.  I asked them what was and they could not tell me.  Needless to say, I went on a hunt for a non-prescription prenatal with DHA.  I am currently taking Women's One a Day prenatal with DHA.  However, the DHA is haunting me.  After I take it, I end up burping it back up and the after taste is just horrible!  I took it last night before I went to bed and I am still burping it this morning!  Does anyone else have this problem???  If you are taking an over the counter prenatal with dha, what are you taking???

Thanks for your help ladies!!!

Re: Prenatal Vitamins

  • My vitamins went up to 50.00 bucks a month so I talked to my OB when I was there last time and she told me to just take Flintstone vitamins.  They taste pretty craptastic but soooooooooooooooo much cheaper!

  • I take Target's Up&Up prenatal and their DHA supplement (separate pill). The DHA is herbal-based, so no nasty aftertaste. The DHA supplement costs $9/month, and the prenatals cost $9 for 300 pills, I think.

I wouldn't want to burp up nasty tastes, either. I hope you find one you like soon!

  • I was taking Women's One a Day, but they were kind of pricey. I switched to the ones my doctor gave me a prescription for and they gave me terrible heartburn. So, I found one at Fry's Food and Drug store that is an off brand, but has the exact same of everything in it that Women's One a Day has (and it is like half the price). I have been taking those ever since.

The brand is Kroger and it just says daily prenatal vitamin, or something like that. Good luck!

Kroger owns Fry's they have wonderful products Wink (This opinion may or may not be influence by the fact I work for Kroger Manufacturing)!

  • I hated my prenatals, but I took them anyways. When I needed a new bottle, I decided to try something recommended online ... and I LOVE THEM!!!

    VitaFusion Prenatal Gummies .... $11.99 for 90

They are soooo yummy, you can't taste the DHA, and I don't need to take them on a full stomach. I HIGHLY recommend trying them. I got them at Babies R Us.

The only downfall I see is that they do not contain iron. I discussed it with my doctor and was told that an iron supplement wasn't necessary at this point. When they check my blood next month, they will let me know if I need to take an extra supplement. She said that most prenatals only contain a small amount of iron anyways.

  • I take Target brand (Up and Up?) prenatals with DHA.  I take them before I go to bed to avoid the fish burps, sorry you still had them in the morning.  Not pleasant!

  • I take the generic Walmart brand...I get 280 pills for $8/$9 bucks a bottle. In the 1 1/2 of taking them the only time I ever felt yucky from them  was when I was first pregnant (or suspected I was). I just make sure to drink water with them because I feel as though they are as big as an elephant! So it helps me to get them down.

The bottle is green with a yellow label & the pills are pink. I brought them in to show my ob/gyn and she said it mets all the qualifications without a stool softner which is the prescription my ob/gyn always writes for prenatals. I haven't had a problem without the stool softner (knock on wood).

  • I have the Target Up and Up with DHA (its kind of a horse pill) but I haven't had any issues.  (or so I think, DH says sometimes I burb in my sleep...hmm)

Anyway, I take it at night with my dinner, and don't think I have had issues...Tongue Tied

I never thought my PNV could be giving me heartburn. I finished my bottle of Target Up & Up last week and started taking the GNC Prenatal's that I bought back in November. My heartburn issues have not been as bad as they were when I was taking the Target brand.

I however do not take one with a DHA supplement in it or separate. So can't help there.

  • My doctor gave me the go ahead to use Target's Up&Up brand, as long as I also used the DHA supplement. If you buy the Up&Up prenatals in the combo pack (rather than the two bottles separately), the DHA supplements taste like coconut. I've never had a problem "burping" them up but I certainly don't mind the coconut taste when they go down.

  • I just take OTC prenatals...no DHA. That stuff sort of creeps me out (especially the plant-based stuff...which is basically algae). I eat quite a lot of fish, which is a good natural source.

    SURPRISE! Here comes #3!
  • I do take the Women's One a Day with the 2 seperate pills.  Last night I took them about 2 hours before bed and I ate something 30 minutes before I took them.  I still had the same problem with "burping" the DHA.  I also sat up for at least an hour.  It was so bad last night that I ended up vomiting, which was no fun!  After vomiting though I didn't "burp" the DHA anymore.  I just dont' want to go through that anymore.  I'm going to finish off this bottle and I think I will try the Target UP and UP brand.

  • I take Target's up and up PNV.  I take a separate DHA pill that I get at Wal-Mart.  They're fish-free so no funky after taste or burping.
