Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Flying with baby: Suggestions?

My husband is leaving for 3 months (3 weeks at a time) to work in Bermuda. He wants my DS and I to fly down for a week. I am very nervous about flying with DS. I am terrified he will cry the whole flight. He's such a busy body that I think he's going to want to move around the entire flight. Maybe not though, I don't know. I guess I am looking for suggestions from those who have flown with their LO before. How much do you pack? What do I leave behind? TIA!

Re: Flying with baby: Suggestions?

  • Figure out what you can buy while in Bermuda (formula if baby is FF, diapers, wipes, etc) and then bring what you can't purchase. Write down a list of everything you will need - from clothing to towels to toys.  In our diaper bag, we bought 3 changes of outfits, 5 or 6 bottles, single-serve formula packs, teething toys and plenty of extra diapers.

As long as you give yourself enough time at the airport, you will be fine!

  • I forgot to mention that I won't have a car down there. Neither will my husband. So, I'm thinking I will have to pack everything!
  • Do you bf? If so, then nurse during take off and landing.

Try to schedule the flight around nap time (so he will nap during the flight).

Bring snacks, books, toys (anything that will keep his attention). Be prepared to walk the aisles and talk with other passengers.

As for the stay, bring: pnp, body carrier, carseat, and all the other necessities.

I told my DH we would have to bring all that. It's going to cost a fortune to ship there I bet. I'm on the fence about just staying home lol. But, it might be a good experience. Thanks for the suggestions.

  • I haven't flown yet, but we are taking a trip to France in June for a wedding and we are planning to ship some stuff there ahead of time, so we can pack less.  For example, we will be there two weeks, so we are going to ship enough formula/baby food and diapers etc over to my friend in advance.  Maybe you can ship some things too to the hotel or where your husband will be living.  Leave behind anything you would really need.  We went to the beach over the summer and I packed way too much clothes and toys that DS didn't play with/wear.

You can check the pnp (as baggage) and bring the carseat on the plane with you. The body carrier can be put in your suitcase and you can even gate check a stroller (if you feel you need one). Everything else can fit into a suitcase.

I would go for sure. It's not as bad as it sounds. I always get worked up before big trips and the kids ALWAYS surprise me with how good they are.

  • Your instinct will be to overpack, but trust me - you want to pack light!!

If you can swing it to fly first class, do so, or see if there are inexpensive upgrades available at the gate.  I did this when I flew alone with DS and was sooo glad to have the extra room.  I wore DS in a moby wrap and didn't even try to use a stroller through the airport.  I definitely recommend using a wrap or carrier to wear DS.  It made it so easy to get around the airport while carrying a diaper bag and pulling my carry on.  I also just wore him in the wrap on the plane and he slept.
