Photography dilemna - need your opinions

So I want to do the belly, birth and baby pics with this baby like we did with E. However, my guy has been sick this week and it's shifted our money plans for the rest of the pregnancy (it was a big OT week that he missed out on). It's not going to affect anything we would normally be doing, but I'm afraid that it's not looking like we'll be able to do all three sessions with my beloved photographer.

So I need to pick two. What two would you go with? (and why)

Belly/Maternity

Birth

Baby/Newborn

Re: Photography dilemna - need your opinions

  • Hi Angel for me I would do Belly/maternity and baby/newbourn. Those are the ones I like to look at the most. For me the birth photos seem a bit too personal of someone shows them to me. Not that they are not great for your own personal enjoyment but If I could only choose 2 I would do belly and baby.

  • If I was a fan of Birth photos I would definitely choose Birth and Baby.    You got maternity pics before and chances are you look the same pg this time as you did last time.  But you will never get the chance again to have photos of your birth and your child as a newborn!    If your not huge on Birth photos, then choose belly and Baby.  Whatever you do, dont nix the newborn shots!!

  • I would do birth and newborn pictures.  They are going to be unique to each child.  Most likely you look similar to how you did when you were pregnant with E.  You could always do some home shots of the belly pics to add to the baby book, but the most important (since you've done it once before) would be birth and newborn.

  • I'm all about the birth pics because...well...ya know Wink
...but I agree with pp's too, don't nix the NB shots either!

Thats actually a good point Smile Im not sure I'd want a photographer in the birth room though but at the same time, I'd want the pics if I could afford it.

  • I'd say birth and newborn! Maybe you can have your husband or a friend take some photos of you with your belly so you at least have something to remember your pregnancy with!

  • That is a tough one! I would probably do maternity and newborn. You'll get different maternity shots this time around because you can include E. If you are planning to have family or other labor support at the birth, they can take some pictures for you. Of course they won't be professional quality, but our doula took a bunch at Max's birth and I'm so glad she did.

If you don't end up doing maternity pics, I would be happy to take some for you, though of course I am not in the least a professional, but it would be better than nothing, I hope. Stick out tongue  Wow, that was a run-on sentence if I ever saw one.

And, I'm sorry E had to miss so much work!

  • Hmmm...that's a toughie!

I would ask yourself how important having professional birth photos is to you. You already have maternity, so birth/newborn seems like the logical answer, BUT you could have E in the maternity as well. If it were me, I'd probably do birth/newborn and get a couple family shots at the newborn session.

  • I haven't read any of the responses, but would Jessica be willing to work with you on this one? After all, you are a great return client. Have you talked about doing a mini session for belly and newborn, and then having her do a full session for birth (since she would have to be on call, and it would be all day - into the night)? That would be the best solution for me. I would rather have just a few of belly and newborn, but then have a bunch for the birth.

If a mini belly/newb session wasn't an option, I would forgo the belly and do birth and newborn. What a hard decision.

  • I agree with Lynchie, whatever combination you pick, you MUST keep the Newborn pics!  I would probably pick the Maternity over the Birth photos, but that's me and I liked my belly and didn't really care for pics of labor/delivery.

  • Maternity and birth. I feel like those are both priceless times, and when baby is a newborn there will be SO many pics anyway I'm sure there will be great ones you can put in the baby book! I wouldnt trade my birth pics for anything.

  • I agree with everyone else in that it really depends on what is most important to you.  I would definitely keep the newborn session... that time goes by so quickly.  If it was me, I would keep the maternity and have someone else in the delivery room take pics, but that was because I ended up with great photos between my mom and the nurse.  The pics I got were enough to remember that time if I had to choose to get rid of one session.  However, if you do not care that much about the maternity pics since you had them last time around, I would go with the birth photos.

I lean towards Maternity and Newborn. It's a tough decision to make though! I'm so sorry your hubby is missing out on work! Maybe your photographer will work with you on the pricing.

  • Thanks for responding everyone! I spoke to Jessica, and she's more than happy to work with me. I also remembered that I had a $50 credit from the contest last year, and then another $50 credit that Kacie gave me (thanks, Kacie!).

The birth is the more expensive of the three, and I really can't show those pics to anyone but me and my guy, so as far as baby book goes, maternity and newborn would get more use. However, the birth was such an amazing experience to remember through pictures.

Keri - I love your suggestion, and Eric thought it was sweet. I may take you up on it, depending on how my talk with him goes. Final decision tonight!

    Thanks again!!

  • Personally, if I HAD to pick, I'd get birth and newborn for sure.  Can you do a mini session for the maternity?  And maybe get just a few prints/couple of digital files?
