DH and I got a book on baby signs for Christmas, and we both downloaded the My Smart Hands app onto our iPhones. We haven't started yet, but just wanted to know if anyone else tried this with their LO and had success with it.
We had great success with signing. I think we started around 7 months with "more" and "all done" in the context of both food and books (her two favorite things). She started signing back correctly around 10 months. At last count, she could sign more, all done, please, thank you, water, milk, diaper, eat, hat, and mom. DD is really verbal, so her spoken language skills have far surpassed her signs at this point, but we still see the above signs daily.
Not with DS but when I worked at the daycare we'd try starting at about 10 months (when they moved into my class) and they usually picked it up by 13 months. We did not use any special program. The other teach and I just decided to start doing it one day.
Yes! DD had a ton of signs and started really early. It's so cool because they are able to tell you what they need - it really lowers the frustration level.
We didn't use any specific program (I work with children with autism, so I have been teaching signs for awhile and just did what I know) and I don't think you even have to use a "program". It's just about consistency and follow through.
Seriously, I think we started showing her signs around 4 months. We didn't expect her to sign, obviously, but just paired them with what we were doing (milk, diaper, bath, book, sleep, walk, car, mommy and daddy, etc). We would label things using signs (book, bird, outside, cat, dog, etc).
So, by the time she was able to do the motor actions, she seemed to realize that all things have a sign to go with them.
We were pretty lazy with teaching her any signs and it wasn't until we started watching the Baby Signing Time DVDs that she picked anything up. She really only used "eat" and "more" with any regularity and still uses them to this day.
Our daycare does it. They said they start doing it when they start on solids becuase they will sit in the high chair at that point vs. being in a chair being fed a bottle. They say most start about 5 months and really start to "get it" by 7-8 months and will start signing back shortly after that.

I was a nanny through college and grad school and practiced baby sign with all of my kids and I found it significantly reduced temper tantrums and frustration from the baby for not being able to communicate. Much less whining too which is always a plus.

Really fun to see her learn like that!
