Babies: 3 - 6 Months

BF moms who supplement

DD is on about 50/50 breastmilk and formula.  Today for some reason she's refusing breastmilk and will only drink formula though, any clue as to what would cause this?  I haven't eaten anything that's different from what I normally eat.  She has pretty severe reflux so I'm not sure if maybe the formula is sitting in her belly better because it's heavier?  I'm really confused, pumping is a lot of work for a baby who doesn't want to eat it.

Re: BF moms who supplement

  • Is this a recent occurrence? How long has she shown a preference?

My guys get 70% breastmilk and 30% formula. Some days they gulp down the formula and seem to not be interested in the breastmilk, and other days it's the opposite. I wouldn't worry about it until/unless it proves to be a real trend. And when/if it does, I personally would think about mixing the milk and the formula together and seeing what she thinks about that. (Make the formula, and then make a bottle that's half prepared formula and half breastmilk.) There are benefits to breastmilk beyond your LO's preference for it, so, unless it's unmanageable to pump (which, believe me, I'd understand, as I hate my f-ing pump with the fire of 10,000 suns), it's worth trying to keep it in her diet.

I really want to get her BM through 6 months despite my hatred of my pump (if my supply keeps up once I go back to work next week).  It was just today so far that she refused it, she's done it once or twice before but not like today where she literally wouldn't take it at all.  Hopefully she'll go back to normal tomorrow.

  • I bet she will. Hey, sometimes I get cravings for one thing over another, too. :-)

    Good luck!
