Infertility

I think it all just hit me....

I have an appointment with my regular ob/gyn on January 3rd.  I made an appointment with a RE for January 4th.

I am both excited and terrified about this whole thing.  I don't feel like my doctor is doing much for me other than throwing some drugs my way and telling me take them.  There has been no testing at all from her.  NONE.  No ultrasounds, blood work, x-rays, procedures, surgeries...NOTHING.  So, I decided to take matters into my own hands.  I am keeping my appointment with her to see what she says but I'm going to a specialist.

The woman at the RE office I talked to was awesome.  This clinic is known nationally with a good reputation.  ERIKSGAL recommended this office so, I went with it :) Thanks!

However, I am absolutely TERRIFIED!  I have all the what if's going on now.  Before now, nothing seemed real.  I knew there was a problem and knew I'd have to have medical intervention but in the back of my mind I was praying for a miracle.  I think part of me is still hoping I can take Clomid and come home with a baby but the other part of me knows that may not happen....then the what if's begin.

It's all so overwhelming.

I think I'm going to start a blog just for this but wth do I name?  Ashley's barren uterus?

  • Just found out that insurance covers nothing once I get a dx from the RE.

Anyone else have no insurance coverage?  How did you pay for everything?  Just save up is the obvious answer I suppose.

  • this seems also to be my story. We have been TTC for over 2 years now and it started soooo slow and now I look back each month and think no much wasted time. Our OB did give Clomid which I thought would be the key.....but NOT. The OB seems to want to give so much time on the Clomid and I wanted to go right to the specialist after the 4 months of Clomid. I think that you have to be firm in what you think a good amount of time trying is. I needed a refferal and after yet another OB appt I called  the receptionist and she got me a refferal.  So at least you now can feel that you are on the right track. Be forwarned...many RE's will do all of the testing and blood work and sperm analysis again.

I know it is hard but you have to look at all of the tests and appt's as steps that will move you forward to the goal. If you don't you will drive yourself crazy.

TTC since 2009 very frustrated 42yr and DH 40

  • That's why I'm going to the RE.  The only test I've done is an internal sono. and that was over a year ago.  There were no cysts and that dr. would never tell me what was going on.  I changed doctors.  This one immediately said I have PCOS.  There was no bloodwork done except for hcg so I could start Provera.  There has been NO tests.  NONE.  How can you dx me with something like PCOS with no tests?

So,because we've had no tests.  At least we'll only do them once and I'll do them through the RE.

I'm peeved about the insurance though.  I knew they didn't cover much, but I thought they'd cover more than they are.

  • Hi. I'm sorry. I know how overwhelming it can be. I think you are right to see an RE. Almost everyone on this board wishes they had gone to an RE sooner. I never really thought much about insurance until I started going to the RE. Until now, everything was always covered. Gyno. visits, the pill, etc.Boy, was I in for a shock on we started the testing. Some of the test weren't covered. I was super pissed off. $2000 later. This when my gyn. did some of them and I still to this day don't think she coded them right. Anyway, we switched from my husband's insurance to mine which covers so much more. Don't know if this is an option for you. Also, I know if you discuss costs up front with the RE and they know you are OOP, a lot of REs will work with you. GL!

Our insurance covers nothing related to IF.  You can pay for treatments several ways: savings, no to low interest credit cards, bank loan, family loan, borrowing from 401Ks, etc.  The toughest thing about the $ part of IF is remembering to think with your head and not your heart.  GL to you.

  • It is rare to find insurance that covers anything past DX of IF. I have Highmark Blue Cross of PA and they cover all testing but nothing after diagnosis. Everyone is different financially. With that said, I have started getting payroll deduction of 100.00/pay just for IF. I am not one to save, especially since we are trying to remodel our house at this time, hence payroll deduction and I never know its gone.

$100.00 a pay isnt much for medical costs but at least it will help. We are going through our final test next week and after I assume start IUI. If our saving could buy us one cycle I would be happy. After that, we will prob take out a zero interest card or home equity??

If anyone else has suggestions as far as how they save, please let me know. Does the office have any payment plans???
