3rd Trimester

Question for those taking an iron supplement

Do you take it with your prenatal or at another time? With or without food? I thought the nurse said to take it with food but I just read that it's better absorbed on an empty stomach.

I have a Dr's appt tomorrow but I'd like to take my 1st dose tonight.

Thanks!

Re: Question for those taking an iron supplement

  • My doctor and pharmacists both said take it with something in my stomach and at the opposite time as my prenatal so it doesn't bother my stomach.  Hope this helps.

  • It absorbs better on an empty stomach, but a lot of people can't tolerate it because it bothers the stomach.  Don't take it with calcium-it's best to take it with vitamin C.

    Your friendly pharmacist :-)

  • I am also on synthroid, and they really stressed that that be taken alone and be the only thing other than water for 45 mins, so after I take that I wait and take all of my other medications while I eat a yogurt or banana.  I don't know if the way I do it is right, but my blood work has been great since I started doing it that way

  • I take them all at night before bed.  that way none of it upsets my stomach.  i am on prenatal vitamins, iron, glucophage, pepcid and others so it's easier to not have to split it up.
  • My OB said to take it at a diff. time than my prenatal b/c it doesn't absorb as well when taken w/ other things.  I do eat a little something with mine because when I don't, I feel very queasy.

  • I take my prenatals before bed and my iron supp after breakfast.  My pharmacist said to take it with food so it doesn't upset my stomach.  He also said it can cause constipation so watch out for that too ;)

  • Whoops -- I didn't realize I'm not supposed to take it with calcium.  I take my prenatal, iron and two calcium pills all together and with a meal.  I guess I'll start taking the iron at a different time...
  • I take mine with food and orange juice...and was told NOT TO take it with my prenatal

  • Thanks for all the responses! Just to complicate things, I'm also on synthroid. I take that in the morning and my prenatals after dinner. Maybe I'll try taking the iron before I go to bed.

  • I was told to take it two hours apart from any calcium otherwise neither the iron or calcium would be absorbed well...so I just take mine in the middle of the night during one of my many bathroom trips.

Also, initially I was taking an iron pill that upset my stomach and now I am taking a grape flavored chewable that provides the same dosage and doesn't bother my stomach at all...

  • Mine is part of my prescription prenatal, so I take them at the same time, right before I go to bed.

  • I take my prenatals, Vitron C (iron) and Vit D all right before bed after a bowl of cereal.  I can't stand the burping of the iron so I take it at night and sleep through it.
  • i'm taking the generic Slow Fe.  i take it at night since i take my prenatal at lunch.  they told me the opposite time of my prenatal. they didn't to say whether or not to take it with food, but she specifically said dont take it with milk.  the box suggests taking it with food so it doesn't upset my stomach, but i take it after dinner/before bed.

I take my iron with dinner.

  • Ditto pps about not taking it with your prenatals, taking it with vitamin C and NOT with calcium (blocks Fe absorption).

Just wanted to add... Iron causes acid reflux and heartburn, so don't take it too close to bedtime. Give yourself an hour or so before lying down.

  • i take mine before bed with my prenatal vitamin.....it is usually about 2 hours after i have eaten dinner.

  • I take mine with orange juice in the morning and then take my prenatals a few hours later because if you take them together you will get sick according to my OB.

  • I take liquid chlorophyll as an iron supplement-1 tbsp with 1 package of emergen-c and a shot of water, every other day (because my iron is really high to begin with) I take it atleast 20 minutes before a meal or before my prenatals.

  • Take your iron supplement at a different time than you take your prenatal & take it with food or else you can feel sick. Also, what no one told me to do, take a stool softener along with the iron supplement - you will be sorry later on (see hemorrhoid he!! message board)!
