Success after IF

Dear IL's...Toddlers + stairs = a NO-NO!@$!@$

Xmas Eve was at DH's parents in the basement.  I had to go upstairs to use the bathroom b/c someone was in the downstairs one.  I told DH (who was playing cards) to watch DS and I would be right back.  I start to come back downstairs and there is my little DS at the TOP of the stairs ALONE, WTF!!!!  I grabbed him and screamed to DH.  Everyone was like "nothing happened, he's okay."  Because of course I'm "oh-so over-protective" of an 18 month old???  MIL was at the bottom of the stairs holding the baby and apparently didn't notice.  FIL had gone upstairs to check the fire and I heard him talking to someone but he was alone when I got out of the bathroom so I don't know if he left DS on the stairs or not.  I was absolutely horrified.  MIL is supposed to be watching them when I return to work and I am SICK over this.  It's the 3rd time something like this has happened.  DH said it was his fault, I still don't know who wasn't watching him but I know no one was : (

  • OMG, this is my biggest fear! Bless you, I kow that was scary. MIL needs a serious sit down (and a sturdy baby gate). GL!

  • It drives me nuts when there is a big group of adults yet no one is watching what the LO's are doing!

Do yourself and LO a favor, teach them how to use the stairs. Do you have stairs at home to practice? We don't (ranch), but I worked hard with LO to teach him to use the stairs (at grandparents, the museum of play, anyplace I found stairs). DS actually does better and holding the railing and walking up/down than going backwards or on his bum. We do go after him if he scales the stairs at my dads, but I don't freak because I know he can do it.

It will be one less worry when you go back to work! I also agree with PP about a gate at the bottom if possible, it will save your MIL from chasing LO 20 times in an hour!

  • I agree  it is absolutely time to teach him how to use the stairs.  It may take an hour of practice and teaching, but once you do, then it becomes a non-issue if someone forgets to put up the baby gate or watch the baby.
