A Very IL Christmas...

So even though I told my MIL that I HATED spending Christmas with her sister (lives two doors down from me) bc her oldest shows up late every.freaking.time for any dinner we have together completely disregarding my low blood sugar and nap schedule....like a fool I agreed.  And not only that but I agreed to make food too.  No small task with two kids.  So I manage to get my food done and my kids napped by the agreed-upon time.  Then we schlep all the way over to her house and...wait for it....wait for it....and wait for it....  Those bozos who were responsible for half the food (and oh, we will get to that later...) showed up 2 hours late!  Yeah, I was cranky.  We ate what we had without them.  Then when they did show up they had this nasty ass weight watchers recipe cauliflower "casserole" that was supposed to be psuedo-mashed potatoes.  Only it was just coarsely chopped cauliflower drowned in a kind of sour cream sauce with bacon and chives and topped with - GET THIS! - American Cheese slices.  OK, I get that you each weigh about 400 pounds but don't bring your diet nasty food to family Christmas dinner.  And if you want to bring cauliflower, fine, just steam it and top it with real freaking cheese.  Why do people INSIST on ruining perfectly good food?  Like sweet potato casserole.  Why add a pound of sugar and lard to perfectly good sweet potatoes?  And since you are on a diet and insist on imposing your diet on all of us, why compliment your diet "mashed" cauliflower with MACARONI and CHEESE?!?!  Velveeta, thank you very much.  I waited two hours for THIS!  REALLY?!  Folks, maybe I am spoiled bc my family puts out a Christmas spread that looks like it came out of Southern Living.  And the bonus part is that its EDIBLE and served ON TIME and I enjoy the company.  Even though I would rather eat doritos and raman with my family on Christmas than any meal with the ILs.  Its just insult to injury to have my Christmas dinner ruined on top of having to miss my family.

I lost my stuff bc they are always late and ruin meals for everyone.  Every damn time we get together.  I guess I am such a *** bc I show up on time with healthy edible food for everyone with not one, but TWO napped babies and don't expect everyone to wait all day on me and my family.  The food being nasty was just icing on the cake with these people.   But I guess since you know so much about me and my ILs (who would make the nicest person you know a "crazy B") you can make a fly-by assessment since you are here all the time and all with your 8 posts.

  • WTF! Get over yourself troll. Clearly you don't have the guys to post under your real screen name. Ebear, you have my sympathy. I miss my big family spreads done up southern style too. Not that I don't appreciate my MIL and her cooking. I miss Turkey, green beans, squash, and banana pudding. My MIL makes ham and scalloped potatoes....it's just not the same. I'm surprised you waited two hours. I would have left.

  • I big puffy heart you, Julie.  :)  I hope your Christmas was wonderful.
  • I'm only gonna say this once... cauliflower does not equal mashed potatoes.  Not even effing close.  Anyone that attempts to tell me that its just as good automatically loses all food credibility with me.

  • I get it too. My IL's make ham and "cheesy potatoes". While it is nice they make us dinner I miss my family's spread. They ate prime rib that day. It's hard to be away from your own family traditions and then also have to deal with rude or weird people.

And to think I offered to make real mashed potatoes (a DH favorite) with red potatoes (skin-on) and rosemary.  I even make them with skim milk and low fat margarine.  Although they are better with real butter.  MIL told me that since the Cousins were bringing mashed cauliflower I shouldn't make them.

I feel for you ebear.  When celebrating holidays with my inlaws I always make "extra" things to make up for the terrible dishes.  For thanksgiving I got up after they had all gone to bed to assemble the stuffing the way I wanted it.  I had a secret stash of extras just in case it was all gross.

I am thankful that we were with my family this year (first time since 2006.0  We enjoyed prime rib and 30lbs of crab that our friends brought us from Alaska.

  • This is what I have learned.....

don't compare IL meals, xmas traditions whatever to the family you grew up with, you are going to be disappointed, its not the same. You just need to enjoy the time with your family whether at the family you grew up with or the family DH grew up with..... and they all have weirdo's and rude people and those you or your DH would rather not be around.

don't expect family meals to accomodate your tastes.

If you want something ie DH favorite Mashed Potatoes, then bring them yourself, better too much than not having or comparing to someone else's who honestly will never be as good as your own.

When going to family functions you need to be flexible on things like naps and schedules with the kids.  If you want to be strict with your routine and schedule, then just do it and leave...but you can't complain about the actions of others, its your choice to wait around for rude people who are late or to stick with your schedule.  It is what it is, you can't change others...

While you might not like the cauliflower substitute, why are you ragging on it so hard?  As someone who struggles with weight and keeping it off, yeah, I get wanting to substitute it.  Is it the same, no, but it is what it is. I have actually begun mixing half potatoes and half cauliflower (gotta sneak those good veggies in to him) since DH doesn't like anything mashed but potatoes.....and now he doesn't notice.  I like to eat alot of food and using the veggie I can eat to my hearts content which I can't do with the starchy food.  If they like American cheese, so what....its pot luck, you take what you get. And yeah, some people love to load butter on food - Paula Deen for one, but you don't have to eat it.  You don't like it, don't eat it!  Next time just bring your potatoes so you will be happy.

The holidays are hard, families are rough.  Just count your blessings to help you get through it. While I don't like trolls, I will say this, seriously, get over the cauliflower.

  • Julie - its not the cauliflower.  I like cauliflower.  I like it plain and not masquerading as mashed potatoes.  Why try to make it be something its not is all I am saying.  Its delicious in its God-given form.  And I didn't appreciate being told not to make a "competing" dish when there was clearly no comparison.

I missed my family profoundly this year.  It just doesn't seem fair I have to spend my Holiday time with people I don't like who don't even care enough about their own (blood) family to show up on time when they are responsible for half the meal.

  • Why making something they are not....because cauliflower is free food and starchy potatoes are not.  If someone has to go on a diet, don't dis them for this...it is what it is, just don't eat it.  Very few people eat plain or raw veggies, so just look at it like its how some like it prepared.

Just be glad you don't have to drive for hours or spend $$ to fly across the country like some people for this fun experience.  Others do, count your blessings.

  • I agree with Julie. This seems like an awfully big deal about something that isn't a big thing, and did the cauliflower really ruin the whole meal? Next time just bring the potatoes anyway.

As for spending time with people you don't like over the holidays, well, that is part of being married. You have to sacrifice some holidays with your family so your dh gets some with his.

Maybe it is time you guys moved away from the ILs? It seems like most of your complaints about them would be moot if you didn't live next door.
