Two "Y" names together

Lucy Mary....   Lucy is our definite girls name, and Mary is my Mom's name, which I'd love to use as a middle name b/c she has a terminal illness and won't be around much longer.  Does it sound too weird though?

Re: Two "Y" names together

  • Hmm. I like the reason for the MN, but I don't think it quite "goes" w/Lucy well. What about Lucille Mary with the NN Lucy?

Great idea, or otherwise Lucy Marie? I think the sentiment is still there if you change Mary to Marie.

  • I honestly don't see a problem with it. I think it sounds nice and it has a lot of meaning for your family. It doesn't sound strange at all. It's a beautiful and classic combo! Go for it! :D

    This

  • You know, there have been many, many posts before this where people have asked, "Does this sound right?!" for middle names that are to honor family members. Every single time we've said, "It does not matter! Few people go by both their first and middle names!" This applies here, too, but you are also lucky that Lucy Mary sounds really pretty together. I would certainly use it.

  • First off, I am truly sorry to hear about your Mom. My prayers are with you and your family.

Normally, I would say no, but I think the sentimental value on this one might outweigh the slight phonetic speed bump.

Would it be meaningful for you to do a variation of Mary, like Maria or Marie? Or Lucille or Lucia? If you are very concerned about the sound of the name, these might be options. If both names are really important for you to use as they are, though, then don't hesitate to use them.

  • I don't see a problem with it.
  • Yeah, I like Lucille Mary or Lucy Marie. My sister's MN is after someone named Mary and she is Hope Marie, since Mary didn't sound as good with her FN either.

I like the idea of this.  I've heard Mary paired with other names- Mary Kate, Mary Shae, Mary Alice, etc.  Maybe there's another name in your family that would pair well with it.

  • Some "Y" names go together, but not so much Lucy Mary. What about Lucia Mary? And you could use Lucy as a NN.

I agree with both of these posters. I don't think it flows well, but if you modify it a bit, it would sound great, and still give you the meaning you are looking for.

  • I love the reasoning for the name- so I would go with it.  Are you going to call her "Lucy Mary" often?

  • You could also do "Marian" for a MN.

  • Never been a fan of Mary but paired with Lucy, the double Y sound is too much.
