3rd Trimester

scared of c-section

So I'm 38 weeks and as of my appt. yesterday, there is no sign of progress, effacement, of him dropping, nothing.  My doc says that by this point, my body should be doing something to prepare for labor.  And that more than likely I'd be having a c-section since he wasn't even trying to enter my pelvic cavity.  I know it's childish, but I am terrified at the thought of a c-section.  I've only had 1 bad "baby" dream while pregnant and it was about me getting a blood clot.  That really doesn't help matters any.  Has anyone had a c-section or are going to have to have one?  Please help calm my fears.

Also, why can I only view one page of posts? On the old boards, you could view any page number you wanted.  What is going on?

 Thanks in advance for ANYTHING!!

Re: scared of c-section

  • I had no sign of anything until right before I went into labor. I was barely fingertip dilated at my 38 week appt and hadn't dropped, etc....but went into labor 2 days later.

  • I was so scared on having a c/s that I wouldn't sign the papers until they agreed my mother could come in the room with me!  However, it was not that big a deal.  Yes, the first day it hurt, but I think I didn't take the pain meds the way I should have.  After that it really didn't hurt that much.  I was especially careful to keep ahead of the pain, and I did fine.  There were other parts of my visits that weren't pleasant, but I thought the c/s was the easiest part.
  • It looks like I will be having one also in a couple weeks - hoping to get some reassurance too :)
  • ugh sounds like your ob is one of those c-section happy ones. your progress at this point has nothing to do with anything. you could go from nothing to delivering a baby within hours.

  • Your doctor is way off base on this one. Plenty of women have ZERO progress and go into labor the next day. 38 weeks is waaaaayyyy too early to make any sort of call like that.

  • Ugh, he is really being alarmist.  You're only 38w, most first time moms go past their due dates. And like pp said, you don't necessarily have steady slow progress for weeks ahead of time.

Don't just give in to a c/s or induction simply because you haven't delivered at 40w.  Make your dr tell you why based on your personal case, not based on vague generalizations.

  • I totally agree with some of the other posts -- it's too early to make that call. ?Try not to let him frighten you. ?I have my C section scheduled for 2 weeks from tomorrow (having it done for medical reasons) ....but I think I'm the opposite of you. ?A vaginal birth scared the livin' daylights out of me! ?If you do end up having a C section, which WHO KNOWS if you will or not at this point, you'll do great! ?There's a lot that can go wrong with vaginal birth, too. ?No way is perfect. ?It may help to figure out exactly what it is that scares you -- needles, the spinal, etc? ?then talk to a nurse about it. ?You'll do great!

About the seeing posts on the next page, if you click on the green "community" ?button (next to "in your area") at the top of the page off center to the right and choose whatever board you want on the the next page that comes up -- you shouldn't have that problem anymore. ?Hopefully, that made a little sense! ?

  • You have nothing to worry about. I had the same fears but its not bad at all. ?They do so many c- sections now a days that its like routine surgery. ?I had a c/s with my first and I think actually preferred it over having to go thru labor. ?Plus, like the others said, you're still 2 weeks away from your due date, things can change by then, and you can go up to 42 weeks and deliver naturally ?
  • I'm sorry, but your doctor should not have said that.  you're only 38 weeks for goodness sakes!

Clearly your baby needs more time to cook.

Don't even worry about a C-section just yet.  You've got lots of time.

  • Don't worry. I was not even a fingertip dilated at my appt. three days before my due date, and my water broke that night, and had the baby the next day---two days early! Everyone is different. You are only 38 wks. Don't give up hope yet. I had a c-section, too, but it was an emergency one because I wasn't progressing. Don't worry, many, many people have them.

Ugh, yes. I would fire this doctor, but I would have asked him about his policies when I first interviewed him... I'm glad my midwives don't do routine internals, because I think this is the kind of worry they can cause. Some women walk around at 3cm for a long time, and others go from 0 to 10 in a day. If you don't want a c/s, you need to tell your doctor so. As long as your baby is doing well, he should be willing to wait at least until 41 weeks before he starts talking c/s or induction.
