How do you...

baby proof trash cans? Ds has some odd attraction to our trash cans. It's seriously weird. I can put him down anywhere in the house and he will crawl over the the trash can, push it over, and try to riffle through it. Gross to say the least.

So how do you baby proof them? We don't have a pantry and there's no place we can put them that is out of reach. We can't (and don't want to) gate off the kitchen. We have three different types of cans (trash, recycling, diapers). One has a flip lid, one is a step lid, and one has a button on the lid you push to open it. He can get into all of them. Please tell me there is a toddler proof trash can. I need help!

Re: How do you...

  • Our trash can went behind a baby gate to keep DS out of it.  We have a little alcove before the stairs to the basement that was already gated, so we just stuck the can in there.  Our recycling is in a Rubbermaid drawer system and he only really bothers it when something is sticking out.  Can you gate off any of the cans?

  • We turned the step trash can backwards and that worked for a bit. Then we put it up high because it was in the laundry room adjacent to the kitchen and we had a small chest freezer in there we put it on. At one point he was gated out of the kitchen. Now it's locked inside the sink cabinet and is just a small trash can.

  • The only area we have gated off is the bathroom, laundry room, and cat liter area. We could put the cans in there but it would involve walking out of the kitchen to throw anything away or recycle which seems inconvenient. The way our pipes are set up we can't put a small can under the sink nor is there any other place we can gate off. I don't think there is a way to gate off our kitchen. There are not two walls or cabinets opposite each other to accommodate a gate. Ds simply pushes the trash can over to get into it so facing it backwards won't help.
  • PS: Mobile babies get into EVERYTHING. I'm seriously floored.
  • I think we were lucky that DS1 was never very interested in it and for a while responded very well when we would say "Mo, thank you". When he started to show more interest, we talked to him every time something went in there - and the trash goes in the trash can, this is dirty, it does in the diaper pail, etc and then we had to let him use it by himself and praise him that he used it correctly. So far this has worked really well. We let him use the trash every day by asking him to help us, which seems to satisfy his desire to play with it. I'm waiting for the day my wallet goes in there :)
