Trouble TTC

BFN on Christmas Eve is a bummer

My DH and I have been trying to get pregnant for about 3 months. This month, I am a week and a day late which is unusual for me because I'm generally right on time within a few days or so. I had finals the week I was supposed to get my period and I'm in a tough RN program -- so maybe the stress threw me off.

But of course, I thought "what if" and went and got a pregnancy test at CVS. It turned negative so fast :(. I keep telling myself this is just the beginning and not to freak myself out, but sometimes I wonder if it will happen. I realize there are many who have tried much longer than I have so please don't take offense to what I'm saying at all. I know I'm having a "pity party" of sorts, but I don't know who else to talk to about this. My 16 year old sister (who I love very much) is pregnant and while I don't envy her situation whatsoever - it's hard to think about. My DH's sister just delivered her second child within 1 year of having her first... and I just feel like everyone can just magically somehow get pregnant :(.

I feel like everyone I know who's pregnant or have had children got pregnant right away or literally can plan out their pregnancies down to the month. Is it too soon for me to go see a reproductive specialist? I bought TCOYF, but the concept of charting and knowing when the right time is - is still confusing to me even after reading it.

I would love any tips or advice from anyone going through a similar situation or anyone in general. I hope everyone is having a very nice Christmas or Holiday!

Re: BFN on Christmas Eve is a bummer

  • BFNs are tough no matter what month you get them, so hang in there.  My advice:

1.) Yes, it's too early to see a specialist.  If you're not pregnant in nine more cycles (meaning a year total TTC), go right to an RE for testing - skip your OB because you can waste a lot of time there.  General rule - an OB will help you deliver a baby, an RE will help you make one.

2.) Lurk on the Trying to Get Pregnant board for help with charting.  You will learn a lot just from reading others' posts, especially when you see girls post their charts to get a little help or advice.

3.) Get yourself some OPKs if you haven't already, and a BBT.

    Good luck!

  • Agreed on the bummer :( - I'm sorry for the BFN on Christmas Eve, I had one too...and if I had just waited - I got my period today...totally could have avoided the disappointment if I'd just waited one more day (I am really irregular and had all the signs of AF, but no AF...lol, so I thought just maybe there'd be the Christmas wish I'd be wanting!)

Don't be sad though - just remember that this is just the beginning of the journey and enjoy the time you have just the two of you, I wish you all the best - the people on these boards are incredibly supportive, I've just come back to reading them myself.

Definitely talk to your OB about it - mine was very supportive, and now has me trying Clomid for the first time after trying for a year.

    Best wishes!!!
