Babies: 0 - 3 Months

how much rice cereal are you putting in the bottle?

we were told to put 3 teaspoons in 5 ounces twice a day. she has silent reflux. not too bad, but she isnt gaining the weight that she should. i tried to do it the last feed. we have playtex drop ins. bought the Y cut nipple. she was sucking at it for 30 min and barely ate 1/2 an ounce. what i am i doing wrong? also, does rice cereal before the 5/6 month mark cause food allergies? i really dont want to do this, but i guess its better than giving zantac i guess.

Re: how much rice cereal are you putting in the bottle?

  • We tried rice cereal in DS's bottle but it was a nightmare. Not only could we not figure out the right nipple (the Playtex "Y" cut was a nightmare -- DS couldn't get ANYTHING out of it) but DS just couldn't stomach the cereal and he was spitting up even more.

The best we could with the nipple was either using the medium flow (which came out way too fast, but at least he could get it out, I guess) or a slow flow widened with a fork or a corkscrew. Not ideal, but it worked a little I guess.

As for the Zantac, I'm not a fan of it either but it is supposed to be safe for infants. DS is on .8ml/day and it seems to be helping a LOT. I'd rather him be on the medicine than the rice cereal at this point. Good luck!

  • Apparently, you shouldn't be giving LO anything but BM or F until they are between 4 and 5 months.

  • I've read and our pedi has told us that giving solid food before month 4 is not ideal.  Rice cereal is solid food. DD has AR and is on Prevacid and it is safe.  So is Zantac. According to research, rice cereal can cause food allergies and overeating. Our pedi recommended starting rice cereal around four months to see if it helps her reflux, but that you really shouldn't be giving it until 5/6 months for "normal" babies. I personally don't want to challenge her digestive system more by changing and adding things that she really doesn't need at this moment.

  • Just buy the formula with the added rice starch already in it and use a regular fast or medium flow nipple.  I know from experience from DD # 1 that it doesn't cause obesity or allergies.  Now DD # 3 has reflux and we started her on it.  It works like a charm for the reflux.  It's called enfamil AR, or you can use the Parents Choice with added rice starch (this is what we are using).  FYI, it doesn't help with sleeping through the night.  Too Bad!!
  • none. we were told to wait until 4-5 months. So far LO is gaining weight great and healthy, no need for rice cereal.
