Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Sitting and standing before rolling over?

My baby is 22 weeks old. She can now sit up unassisted, easily, for 10 minutes at a time. She'll eventually tip over, but she's very good at correcting herself if she starts to tip slightly one way. She also bends over to pick up toys from the ground while she's sitting.

She also ALWAYS wants to stand. If I try to sit her on my lap, she just stiffens her legs and pushes off me wanting to be held in a standing position. She sometimes refuses to sit, preferring to stiffen until you hold her up. She has been doing this for a long time (since bearing weight on her legs around 12 weeks, maybe). She is getting quite good at standing, too, and really doesn't need much support. She's definitely going to be an early walker.

However, she is not even really close to rolling over. She hates being on her tummy and will usually just push her head straight down and start crying. We still do tummy time for a few minutes each day, but she doesn't tolerate it well. I really thought rolling over would be an earlier milestone than the other things. Anyone's five-month-olds not rolling over, but are sitting up? Strange kiddo...

Re: Sitting and standing before rolling over?

  • We haven't worked on standing yet, but DD mastered sitting unassisted about 3-4 weeks before finally rolling this week. She'll eventually get there.

  • Our DD is 18 weeks old and she starting the signs for sitting up.  I to thought that rolling over would come before sitting up especially considering DD is a tummy sleeper.  I guess I take sitting up over rolling over.  Then the playtime is more fun while they are sitting up instead of them laying on a playmat or something.  Or she can sit on the couch next to me when I read to her or in my lap.
  • I have noticed that a lot of babies seem to do great with some activities, and not so great with others.  My son is the opposite of your daughter.  He rolled tummy to back at 2 weeks old, and back to tummy a little before 4 months old, but has absolutely NO interest in sitting.  He's even crawling already, but he won't even sit assisted.  He just pushes with his legs until he flips over on his belly, and then off he goes trying to crawl away from me.  (I must admit, I'm getting a little nervous about his refusal to sit still, lol).

  • My DS is doing the same as your DD. He loves to stand and sits up pretty well unassissted (only for short periods), but has yet to roll over. He has been looking like he's on the verge of it for weeks, but just can't get that leg/hip over to make the roll. I'm not really too concerned with it. They'll do it when they're ready :)

  • Mine is opposite. Rolling both ways for months, but no sign of sitting.

  • I could have written this word for word about my own DD. She has rolled a few times ( belly to back only) by herself but has NO interest in continuing. She LOVES to stand, sitting for several minutes without assistance. When on tunny (which she totally doens't mind) she will lift her head just fine, will attempt to get up on her forearms but definitely has more strength in her legs because she can get those under her to try to scoot along, if only she could get her arms to cooperate! LOL Right now she does an army crawl. It's pretty darned cute!
