Breastfeeding

Should I stop pumping?

So I have been pumping every night before bed even thought Lo isn't eating at that time. It started out as having milk for DH to feed her the first time she gets out...some howi managed to get a freezer supply of about seventy five ounces. Should I keep pumping our will my supply crash. I'm already feeling like my supply is crashing but with moving across country I don't want to have a ton of milk to try and transport.

Re: Should I stop pumping?

  • I admire you!  I wish I had enough breast milk to store!  I was told to continue pumping and breast feeding regularly to maintain supply. (keeping up supply and demand), otherwise you may get engorged painful breasts and/or decrease in supply (since there is no demand to keep up with).

  • I wonder if I should pump during the day instead? I am just worried all this milk is ghing to go to waste when we go to move. It would break my heart to toss it,.especially after working so hard to get it.
  • Unless you have supply problems, you don't need to continue pumping. Bf'ing does work on supply and demand, so just nursing LO should be enough demand. You could have DH give LO a bottle every day so that milk gets used up. In that case, you'd want to pump during that bottle feeding, otherwise your body would eventually stop making milk for that feeding. That way, you use up that milk and always have a little stash on hand for outings/babysitters, etc. You can also use your stored milk to make LO's rice cereal/oatmeal when the time comes for that (if it's in a deep freezer). You could also donate your milk, there are local organizations for that (besides national milk banks which require larger donations). I think one is called Eats on Feets.
If you're worried about transporting your milk for your move, it can be packed in dry ice so it stays frozen.

  • I do the same thing as you, pump late at night before bed after DD is in bed. I keep pumping to keep the demand up since I stay up later than her, and I am afraid to stop pumping.
