Do you wake a stinky baby??

I'm desperately trying to get Genna to sleep just one 4 hour stretch at night but she always poops after I put her in her crib.  I feel bad letting her just sit in her own poo until the next feeding.  Especially because we just got rid of her diaper rash and I certainly don't want it coming back.

What do you guys do?

Re: Do you wake a stinky baby??

  • I always change her diaper cause I feel bad...yes it wakes her up but I don't think I could sleep knowing she has a yucky diaper. Do you change her before you feed? or just afterwards?

I know I feel bad too!  I usually always change her before to wake her up, but she always poops after she eats.

  • I change Joanna even if she's asleep. Most of the time she either stays asleep or will quickly fall back asleep after she's changed so it hasn't been a problem (yet).

  • I save a last ounce in the bottle, then change Rocco which wakes him up.  But giving him that top off of the last ounce does help him fall back to sleep a little quicker and then I don't have to worry about him sleeping in a dirty diaper.

I find that swaddling her and then turning on her sleepy sounds sheep helps calm her down and she usually goes back to sleep.

  • Yeah, I wake him up.  I don't want him chillin' in his poo for the same reason you mentioned, diaper rash sounds like no fun.

Do you put her in the crib at the same time every night?  Can you try to keep her out of the crib until that time to see if she'll poo before hand o you can change her and then lay her in bed?

  • I have to know - did you wake her???? We don't have this problem as Gia poops as soon as we put her on the changing table. It's like a joke, if you don't wait a few minutes to change her you will be changing her again right away...

Unfortunately no, she hasn't really been conducive to any sort of schedule yet.  Her poops used to be immediately after she ate but now anymore.  So it could be 5 minutes after or an hour after :(

Well I'm just preparing for tonight.  But I always do wake her because I really can't leave her sitting in poop.  The problem is that she screams bloody murder when we change her, she hates it.  It's really the only time (other than when she's hungry) that she cries.

P.S. Sorry I ran out so fast today.  It was my first solo outing with Genna and she was crying because she was hungry and it was a little overwhelming, lol.  I just wanted to get her home and feed her.

I have the FB seahorse on our changer and I turn it when we change DD. I feel like it destracts her from changing time :)

  • Charlie has excellent timing when it comes to pooping as well. lol After I feed him, I lay him down knowing full well that he'll probably poop and let him sleep until he does (usually about 10 - 15 minutes). After he does, I change him, which he HATES, and then nurse him for another few minutes to settle him back down. It makes for a long middle of the night feeding, but its worth it if it means he'll sleep longer and more comfortably.

It's so hard when they cry like that... Good job on your first solo outing, it's overwhelming - that was me last week!!! I still feel like I'm forgetting a ton of stuff when we go out. And Genna is sooooo cute - she's such a peanut!! Good luck tonight!

  • I change him. It wakes him up but I'd rather wake him and have him irritated for a little while than have him get a rash for a few days from sitting in a dirty diaper.
DS1 had severe diaper rash issues from sensitive skin so I think I'm a little more paranoid about rashes than most people.

I know, it doesn't bother me when I'm at home but out in public I feel like everyone is staring at me thinking "shut that baby up!" lol.  I feel like I forget stuff too.

Thanks!  Gia is adorable too!  I can't believe she's 8lbs 11oz because she looks like a peanut too!  She's so cute and petite.  I might be in denial about how tiny Genna is, haha.

I don't blame you.  Seeing her little red heiny really upset me.  I didn't know babies could get a rash so fast but our pedi said it was common because they have so many BM's.

  • We always always always change them, it will wake them up eventually anyway and you are sure to get a nasty diaper rash.

You're so right.  I don't even think I could sleep knowing she had a stinky diaper.

she was actually 8lb 3oz when I weighed her yesterday. So now I'm worried she's not gaining enough because that's only a 1 oz gain from last week if it's right...now I'm paranoid she's not getting enough food. I mean she eats! So I would think she gained more... Guess the girls are right - it's always something!!

LOL I'm sure she's fine!  It's true though, it is always something.  Weigh her next week and if she only gained another ounce then maybe call the pedi?
