Anyone else taking colace?

I have had some serious pressure and pain due to constipation. At my 16 week appt last night my doc suggested Colace.

Just wanted to see if anyone else has used it and what ya'll think? Or if anyone says something else is better!

TIA and Happy Holidays everyone!!

Re: Anyone else taking colace?

  • Colace is a stool softener.  I makes bowel movements softer, wetter, and easier to pass.  It's not a laxative, so it doesn't "speed things up."  So basically, it works better to prevent constipation than to relieve it once you're already there.

My prenatal vitamins actually have a very small dose of Colace in them, to prevent the constipation that can come with calcium and iron.  I have found it works great.  No trouble since I switched to this brand.  The dose in my vitamins is 50mg, which would be like taking 1/2 a regular Colace pill.

  • I take one a day with my iron pill.  I am anemic and the extra iron pill is making things unpleasant.  I also take Miralax if I get really blocked up and have 5 prunes a day.  It seems to be helping.

  • i'm taking 2 pills of the generic colace every few days. i don't find my stool particularly soft or wet, but it does help keep things going. if i'm really in trouble, i use miralax which is stronger. luckily, neither of those 2 medications have ever taken me by surprise and had me running for a toilet. nope, both are pretty subtle.

  • I took it once before my BFP, and it gave me painful -- like doubled over in pain -- cramps. So, I'm trying to add fiber to my diet rather than take any supplements. But, I've heard it works for a lot of people.

  • So far I've been pretty regular, but my BM's have been hard and not so pleasant to pass. I started taking Colace, just one capsule (50 mg) every few days and it definitely has helped soften things up!

  • my doctor just mentioned this to me at my last check up.  but she also gave me a sample of a different pre-natal which has a lower dose of iron and a stool softener.  so far my pain has been much better and i can't tell you how excited i was to have a normal bm this morning.  (this constipation is really preparing me to be a mom-i've never been so excited about poop!)  but it's good to know that some people have had a good experience with colace.

  • I take 3/day (dr's recommendation) and I still don't go as often as I'd like; I had the same problem w/ DS #1.  Even w/ 3/day, I've never had to rush to the bathroom, it just feels normal.
