If we received them in the mail from family or friends, I do send a note. If we get them in person, I thank the person right then and do not send a note.
Unless they're mailed, and they happen to arrive before the person's Christmas card goes out - then I'll thank them in the Christmas card. But we only usually get one mailed thing per year and it's from my aunt... so, yes, she does get a thank you and usually a gift back from us.
All other gifts are exchanged in person, and the giver is definitely thanked many times.

Ok Thanks ladies! I do the same thing but had a discussion at work about it. Some people send TY cards even if they get the present in person. I didnt know if maybe I was practicing bad manners!
