mom flying in from CA - when to call? how to deal with flights at last minute?

Hey ladies,

So related to the post below, what would you do if your mom lived in CA and you lived in FL? My mom wants to be there for the our little boy's birth, and we're fine with that, but she lives so far away. We've been trying to figure out how this will work? Should she buy a ticket now and then try for standby when the time comes? It's also tricky because her work stinks, but she is going to try to get FMLA to come out for a month, so that might give us more wiggle room. Any advice is much appreciated!

Oh, and for what it's worth, my ob said yesterday she thinks I'll go full term (this is my first baby).

thanks!

Re: mom flying in from CA - when to call? how to deal with flights at last minute?

  • We have the same issue.  We are in CO and my mom is in NJ.  I spoke with a customer service rep from Continental Airlines and they suggested to look for last minute round trip flights on travelocity, orbits, cheaptickets.com etc.  It's much cheaper than booking a one way ticket through the airline itself.

So our plan is to wait until those last couple of weeks and see what the Doc says about my progress and my mom will book a round trip ticket for one month.  If she needs to switch the departing date it will probably be like $75 change fee or something around there.  It's frustrating but what can you do, unfortunately these LOs don't tell us what day they'll be arriving.

  • When I had dd we were living in NC and my parents were in CA, so I am familiar with this dilemma. :)  I ended up getting pre-e and HELLP at 39 weeks so we called my parents when I went into the hospital for induction. I think they ended up calling the airlines and getting a deal (my mom can talk her way into anything) because of the situation. They left the following morning so they weren't there for the birth, but were there that night.

Trying to plan a ticket is so impossible these days, especially since they charge you to change the ticket. Good luck!

  • My mom's in FL and we're in DC. I'm just going to let her know when we go to the hospital and then she's going to try to book a last minute flight. I know she has a a free flight for Jet Blue so she's going to try to use that, but otherwise I would just look online. You can often get decent last minute deals on some sites.
