What to give a 13 year old boy (NOT $)

He's a bit immature and his mom is horrible. We won't give $ because she'll take it. Same with any sort of gift card unless its ultra specific and not to anywhere she could spent.

He's obsessed with Legos (but has 1000's of $'s worth already and I refuse to spend another dollar on it!).

Do you know what bands or sports teams he likes? T-shirts for either are a pretty safe bet.

You could get him a paper jams guitar (or drums). You can also purchase a strap and amp for the guitars.

I should add that his mom just wants ppl to buy him stuff SHE doesn't want to (clothes, shoes, drum sticks for band class) - I refuse. She makes good money and so does her FOURTH husband (not the kid's dad) - she's just a gambling addict scammer. YEAH FOR IN LAWS!

We've tried this for years previous. I used to go pick them up on weekends (he and his sister) because they were literally abandoned for times on their own without food, etc. Serious bad stuff. He's really really impatient, has very little social skills (and our short time influence hasn't penetrated the solid granite surface of his inability to cope, deal, have patience). It just ends up as a train wreck.

Does he like video games? When my nephew was that age gift cards to Game Stop were a huge hit. I doubt his mom would want to use that for herself.

I have both a 14 and 17 year old nephews. In the past we've taken them to sporting events, took them to a broadway show and given them a number of things like a telescope, digital camera, flip camera (gave that to one nephew when he was 15 and he LOVED it), guitar, portable DVD players....

I just ordered him a skateboard, helmet and pads. Much to the chagrin of my MIL. "He doesn't skateboard because he's so clumsy" to which I responded, "Well I refuse to subscribe to the endless excuse making for him. There seems to be armies of people at the ready and willing to cut him down. He'll be fine."

Wonder HOW this (SIL) situation got to this point, huh?!

My nephew is 13, and we have the same problem with money in his house too. The family cannot mail him birthday cards for that reason! Anyway, believe it or not he's really into clothes so for Christmas I got him a shirt and hoodie from his fav. store.
