Baby Names

Honest opinions...is this weird?

Long story short, our LO will be named Robert, as that is DH's middle name, as well as a family name. However, other Roberts in the family are already called Robby and Bobby, so we are considering calling LO RJ instead (R for Robert and J for our last name). Is this odd though, since the J is coming from our last name? We've only told a few people the name, and two of them didn't "get" it. DH and I really don't see anything wrong with it though, but maybe we ARE weird! Stick out tongue

Re: Honest opinions...is this weird?

  • I went to high school with a guy who went by his first and last initials. So it isn't weird to me. He went by JB.

  • you could always call him Bert :)

  • I find it kind of odd, mainly because when saying his entire name the last name would be redundant, since RJ Johnson would be Robert Johnson Johnson.

I do know someone who uses a J initial to mean junior, though. Their son has the same name as his father and they call him TJ for Thomas Jr.

Why not call him Rob if everyone else goes by Robby or Bobby? I love the name Rob, and for what it's worth, every Rob I've known has been a great guy - and very handsome. :)

This.  Why don't you give him a "J" middle name, and have him go by RJ.

His middle name will start with an S...it's a family name that has been used for 4 generations and DH and I are pretty set on it. DH is a JR, but didn't want a "third". We love the name Robert, but just having a hard time with what to call him. Maybe we just call him Robert and simplify? I don't know. This is so hard. LOL

  • I went to school with a guy who went by JT (can't remember what the J was, but T was his last name). Even his mom called him JT.

  • I wouldn't think anything of it... I knew several people in school that went by their first initial/last initial!

  • I don't think its weird - my husband's name is Jason and our last name starts with a B and one of his nicknames is JB.  If you and your husband likes it that's all that matters.

PS - We had chosen Robert (Bobby) if we were having a boy - love the name!

  • I think you may be over thinking this. RJ is fine.
  • I always brace myself when I see an "is this weird" post!

This one doesn't even register slightly on my weird-o-meter. Totally normal.

  • I have a nephew that goes by RJ and its for his last name and junior...his initials are SWR jr...so your idea seems perfectly fine to me :)
  • I went to school with an August J... who went by AJ, so no, I don't think it's weird at all.
  • I don't think it's weird.
  • My cousin had a boy that became a 'thrid'...John Charles B***** III, they call him JT...none knows where the T comes from...maybe the 'third'?  So call him whatever you want, most people will just assume his middle initial is J usless you tell them otherwise.

  • Nope, I think this is relatively common. I know an adult with that type of name.
  • No, his initials are RJ. I don't see why it has to be the first and middle initials that make up the nickname. I'm not personally a fan of initial names. I think they sound kinda... low class. What about Rob?

  • since i was three, i have been friends with Kristine Clastname. She has always gone by KC, and by now, she is "Casey" to everyone.

  • I work with a guy named RJ and it's his first initial and last initial. I don't think it's weird at all.
  • I don't think it's weird at all. BIL gets called SJ sometimes after his first and last name.

  • I dislike it, BUT only because that's one of my brothers' nn and he is such a moody @ss sometimes!  Stick out tongue  Assuming you don't share any of our genes though, I think you'll be just fine with your RJ!

This made me LOL...I have 4 younger brothers, so I feel your pain!

  • Not weird but why don't you just call him by the middle name then?

  • my MIL's name was Diane D (last name) and went by Dee Dee her whole life.

    I don't think it's weird.

Married on 3.20.2004. It took 30 month, 2 failed adoptions and IVF for our first miracle. We have had 9 foster kids since he was born and started the domestic adoption process when he was 10 month old, we had 4 failed matches in that time. After our daughter was born we brought her home and spent 2 weeks fearing we might lose her because of complications that came up. But Praise God all went through and she is ours forever! • Works for me.  You could also just call him Robert or Rob (or even potentially by his MN).  You have lots of options.
