tell me about convertible car seats

M is still in the infant seat and I feel like I have to stuff her into it. So I think it's time for a convertible. Which one do you like/dislike? Does it make sense to buy one that can go up to 65, 70 lbs, or is a 40 or 50 pound one fine? I'd like this to be our last car seat, but obviously I don't know what I'm talking about--is that even possible?

  • I have the Britax Marathon and love it. DH has the Britax that only goes to 40 pounds and mine goes to 60 I think. F is almost 2 and he is about 28 lbs and he is 50% in both height and weight, So we figure he has a while before he outgrows either one.

  • We have the Britax marathon and love them.  One of DH's coworkers gave him an evenflo that they used for a year, so it was maybe 2 years old at the time, and while it looked nice, it was such a PITA to use that my cheap DH told me to order him one of mine!  I have several friends with the Graco MyRide 65 that love it - until I realized over the summer that I could get the Britax's cheap/same price as the graco since all their new models were coming out soon, it was the car seat I was planning to get.  Oh yeah, I was pleasantly surprised that it actually gives us more front seat room than the infant carrier.
  • We have the Britax Diplomat and we like it a lot.  The straps are easy to use and adjust and it has a headrest thing that rolls up and down to accommodate your growing child.  It only goes to I think 45 pounds, but we are thinking that should be fine as DD is 2.5 and is about 30 pounds now.  We also have a second less expensive EvenFlo Titan Elite that we got to use when we went on a plane trip and it serves as our second seat;  it is actually roomier than the Britax and goes to 65 pounds so we may use that for Ellie once Noah is old enough to switch to a convertible.  We like them both, although the Britax has more padding and protective elements and the straps are easier to use.

  • We have Britax Marathon in both cars that goes up to 40 pounds. Jason is about 35 pounds right now and still using it. We are thinking of getting him a booster seat once Erin grows out of her infant seat.

  • We also have a Britax Marathon and it's great. Looks very comfy and was easy to install. We had Sarah in her infant seat until she outgrew it in length (32 inches) at around 14 months. I would have kept the infant seat longer if she wasn't so tall - I really liked it.

  • I switched Aaron early?at 7 months?because he was so cramped in his infant carrier with his helmet. We also use a Britax Marathon CS and it fits pretty well in my Saturn Aura and DH's VW Jetta.

I got the Marathon based on years of safety record and family recommendations (both SILs said to get it).  We also got ours on clearance because Britax was redesigning the line and wasn't making any more of our seat.  Plus it was during BRU's "great trade in" so we got 25% off on top of that. I think we got it for $125 or so (retailed for $269ish).

  • I love my Evenflo Triumph car seats. They won't be our last seat though because of the laws in Ohio. Kids have to be in a booster seat until they are older than 8 years or taller than 4'9". A kid near that age and size would never fit in a convertible. We're planning to have to buy a couple booster seats after DD#1 outgrows the convertible. Sadly, she won't be out of the convertible and in a booster before DD#2 will need to move to convertible so that means we'll be buying another 2 convertibles a grand total of 4 convertible car seat purchases. Sad
