I need to diet and stop drinking pop....

Ugh! I hate the way my body looks right now. I want to lose atleast 30 pounds but would be thrilled if I made it to 20.

My big problem is, is that I dont eat like I should. Im so busy during the day I just dont eat. I usually grab sodas and that will be my "breakfast and lunch and snacks"  I will eat dinner but thats been mostly takeout for the past week.

If I could just stop drinking soda I think I would be okay. I've tried giving it up before but I get awful caffiene withdrawl headaches...its bad. I thik im just gonna have to tough it out and just deal for a few days until they pass.

Somebody give me hope it can be done...:-(

Re: I need to diet and stop drinking pop....

  • About 5 years ago I stopped drinking soda. It can be done. I just stopped buying it. I did have headaches but they one lasted awhile. I did not drink any caffine except Iced Tea. I started drinking coke/soda/pop again when I was pregnant, it help me burp and feel better in the beginning. Towards the end of my pregnancy when I found out I had GD I had to stop drinking it and I have craved it ever since. I NEED to again. DH likes to drink crown and coke though so we have it in the house. It will be much harder this time. It can be done. I need to lose 50lbs and want to before we TTC so that is my motivation. I eat right, but need to exersice.

  • The way I see it, you've got 3 options:

    1) stop cold turkey and deal with the withdrawal symptoms that could go on for several days or more

    2) gradually cut back on your caffeine intake until you're consuming a reasonable number of calories for caffeine per day and/or able to tolerate the withdrawal symptoms better

    3) switch to a caffeine source with fewer calories (ex. diet pop, coffee w/o tons of sugar, tea, etc).

Personally I'd  try 2 or 3 first.  1 is brutal...I've been there, and sometimes it takes a week or so to get through it, which is a long time with or without a baby.

  • Maybe start getting some snacks together that are easy to grab. ?Carrot sticks, small bag of pretzels, boxes of?raisins. ?

?I think the?caffeine?is just something you'll have to deal with unfortunately. ?It takes a few days but maybe taking some tylenol would help... ?My problem is that I hate the plain taste of water. ?I always need to mix it with juice. ?

  • I was a regular soda girl my entire life and then realized i really needed to jump on the diet soda bandwagon. So at first, I went straight to diet and only diet. It was fun because I didn't really remember what I was missing. Now, on a rare occasion and treat, I will get a regular soda at a restaurant or something. It can be done! Good luck!
  • Thanks for the advice ladies. I think i'm gonna try and go cold turkey but if the headaches get to be too much i'll have a diet soda, just to make the headache go away. Hopefully after a week or so I wont need the caffiene anymore, and then I can completely quit the soda! :-)
  • First of all, you are not alone in the "hate the way your body looks" category. I am right there with you & actually started getting serious about changing 2 weeks ago.

I have totally revamped what I buy in the grocery store. And I make sure that there are always stuff to grab when I am hungry that's not full of empty calories. I also started counting my calories on Diet Plate.com. Its a very helpful website, IMO, easy to use & helps me see exactly what I am eating. I am also trying to start working out again & am trying couch to 5k to get me running.?

Giving up regular soda can be done. I gave up regular soda 4th of July--& was a total coke & Dr Pepper junky. At first, I went to Diet Coke & Diet Dr Pepper. Once I was over that hump, I started weaning to caffiene free sodas & for the most part drink only caffiene free if I have a soda. I am down from having 2-3 cans of regular soda a day to may 3 caffiene free diet sodas a week.

Anyways, bottom line, you CAN do it, just take it slow & make acheivable goals. Good luck?

  • heres my pop tip...

i used to work in a restaurant that only did breakfast and lunch, so we were there at 6am.  now as anyone knows, working in a restaurant it is REALLY easy to drink soda your entire shift.  So, i would take an 8oz kiddie styrafoam cup when i got there, and had about 3/4 of it full of soda for the wake up jolt (i dont drink coffee). then i would only drink water until i had my meal.

i didnt like water as much in the beginning either, but i think you just get used to it.  now i jsut try to confine my sodas to meal times, so i am not endlessly sipping on soda.  i also try not to have a pop until lunch, but as any other new mom knows, sometimes you need the cafeine earlier :):)
