Any former mirena users?

I thought this may be the most appropriate forum to post since you are all prego! I had a mirena for three months, but had it removed because my body was basically rejecting it. Upon removal, my DH and I started to realize that we aren't ready for our fertility to end and time isn't really on our side plus we like our kids close in age. Anyway, we are not preventing. I read you should wait a month for first real period ( I bled entire time on mirena and then had bleeding for eight days after removal). My doc said nothing about waiting. What are your experiences?

  • You don't need to wait. I started TTC right after it got taken out and was successful in cycle 3.

How long did you have it? I read it thins the lining and a miscarriage is more likely. I was very lucky with my boys so worried about that being a factor. Read mixed things online, but OB said nothing.

  • I had mine put in at my 6 week appt after DS was born. I had it removed just before his first birthday, so about 11 months. I never had a period, but was also nursing that whole time. I had withdrawl bleeding for 4 days after removal. My first cycle was 29 days. We started actively trying (charting BBT and using OPKs) cycle 2. I got pregnant that cycle. I didn't ovulate until CD 19, and wouldn't have know without temping. I tested positive at 9DPO.

I would chart your BBt using Fertility Friend since your cycles may be off right now. If you read the newbie blog on the Trying to get pregnant forum there is a lot of wonderful info. Good luck.

  • I had mine for nearly 3 years due to endometriosis (its one of the few treatments that are *relatively* drug-free, minus the progesterone that it does secrete locally into the uterus; I also did Lupron for treatement, but that is besides the point). I had it taken out because we were getting close to deciding on starting a family. I was immediately put on progestrin only oral BC. Six months after that we decided to start trying. It took us 7 months, but we are here!

I had it for a year.
Don't believe everything you read. The manufacture says it is fine to get pregnant right away and your OB didn't say you needed to wait either. Trust your doctor. The only thing of concerned is that your cycles are likely to be wonky for a bit and it will be a little harder to pinpoint ovulation.

  • I had mine for around three years. It took like a month and a half to get a period and I think closer to around three months after before I felt like I had ovulated. I took mine out in July and we got pregnant in December but had been trying since august.
  • I had mine in for the full 5 years (the plastic one, not copper) Had it taken out February of last year and am now pregnant with my first.  Took a while to get there, but now we're here!

  • I had mine for 5 years and was told to wait a month because the IUD thins the lining.

I had mine for 2 years no periods on the Mirena, well I didn't really have them on the pills anymore either.  I did wait 3 cycles because I had been on some sort of hormonal BC for 17 years! My period were average 25 days and went like clock work those 3 cycles.  We got Pregnant our first try!  I was Amazed!  I think its important to think about if you were regular before the IUD or not, that way you will know what to expect.

  • I had mine for a little over a year. It was taken out in August and my doc told me I probably wouldn't get pregnant the first month. After a couple months of reading those stories you refer to I asked my doc if any of it was true and she said that it was false and it is perfectly fine to get pregnant right away and that Mirena shouldn't stay in your system longer than 10 days after it's removed so that it isn't the reason we weren't pregnant yet. Anyways got pregnant on my 4th cycle off Mirena, I'm 6 wks now. Good luck to you! Stay positive

  • I had mine for 2.5 years so add in pregnancy and I didn't have my period for 4 years! I got it out June 2013. My midwife said she would like to see me wait one full cycle before trying. I also drank red raspberry leaf tea for uterine health. I started using OPKs for my first few cycles just to see if I was ovulating but I never saw a surge even though my periods became regular immediately. For the last 6 months we were not avoiding but this is our first cycle actually trying. I know plenty of people who got pregnant right after removal but I felt more comfortable waiting since we weren't exactly trying anyway. Good luck!

  • Hi. I had the Mirena for 5 years before my husband and I decided we were ready to try to have children. While on the Mirena I rarely ever got my period. I had my Mirena taken out September 17th 2013 and concieved mid November 2013 so for me I started ovulating normally pretty quick. But everyone ovulates differently whether you were on the Mirena or not.

Dr. recommended we wait two cycles before TTC because of uterine lining, not fertility. Two cycles came and went we got a + preg test the next month.
  • Thanks everyone. I just started temping, so hopefully that will at least tell me where I am at ...I hope!

  • I had the Mirena for 5 years, it was removed and a new Mirena was inserted. However, my uterus expelled the device and thank goodness it did because I was pregnant even though the pregnancy tests showed a negative result. So here we are at week 7....baby #5.
  • I had 2 Mirena's over a 10 year period....mine was taken out in September as an emergency and I found out I was pregnant around the first week in December. I am now 11 weeks.

  • My doctor didn't say anything about waiting either. I had mine in for almost two years and had it removed in April 2013. We just found out last week that we are expecting. So it took us about 8 months. Good luck with everything.
