XP: Combining breast milk?

I'm trying to find out if I can combine breast milk from different pumping sessions and then freeze it.  My milk just came in and I'm only pumping because I'm engorged.  I don't want to introduce a bottle yet but I also don't want to throw out the 2 oz I just pumped.  I probably won't pump again until tomorrow.  Any advice would be appreciated, thanks!

  • Yes, you can combine, just don't add warm milk to something that's already been refrigerated.  Make sure the fresh stuff is cooled down before you add it.

    Thank you!!

  • To add to that, you should write the oldest date on the bottle/bag to make sure that you don't use it too late!

  • I hope you're only pumping enough to relieve the pressure/pain, not pumping until you're empty---otherwise, your body will keep producing that much  because it thinks the baby needs it.

My LC actually specifically said to avoid pumping until at least two weeks unless I was uber engorged and hand expressing the minimum wasn't working because otherwise my body would think that he needed that much to eat.

I'm only pumping about 5 min (if even) on each side.  Does that seem like too much?

:shrugs:  I'm not an expert...I was just sharing what I was told.  I never really had engorgement problems, per se. I'd not do it any longer.  If you're getting an oz out at one week, that's close to what a one week old baby eats, so basically you're pumping out a feeding.

Ugh, I wish I didn't have to deal with it at all.  I don't particularly care for the pumping.  The LC had me pumping after a couple days because LO wouldn't nurse without the nipple shield.  Thankfully she's weaned off of that now.  I have huge boobs to begin with too, so the engorgement is really uncomfortable.
