I'm 37 weeks along and have my c-section scheduled for Wednesday. Did anyone have any concerns about how the pain meds after the c-section would affect BFing? Will the babies be ingesting any of the meds as well since they're in your system? Not sure about how I would feel feeding my newborns Vicodin through my breastmilk. Anyone have any info? TIA!
Re: C-section meds and BFing
A couple days?! Was it horrible? I thought it took 3 months to fully recover from a c-section. How long did it take everyone else before they didn't need the pain meds anymore? (I don't have any kids yet, and this topic honestly scares the sh*t out of me).

They're not going to give you any meds that aren't safe for BFing. Why would they deliberately sabotage that?
I honestly can't remember what pain killer I was on afterwards...but something like vicodin. I had enough for 4-5 days after I got home. But, the doctor told me that they prescribed me more than usual because my babies were in the NICU, and they knew that the toll of daily visits and all of that walking would make my recovery a bit more difficult. I also got a script for 800mg ibuprofen. I would take a painkiller every 8 hours, and ibuprofen in between (4 hours after, every 8 hours) or as needed. I probably took the ibuprofen consistently for 3 weeks after, and then as needed (usually when I went to bed) for a couple more weeks. I feel like my recovery was long compared to other csection moms I know, but I can't even put into words how hard on my body it was to make 2 NICU trips every day.
both times i was given percocet and rx strength advil... i actually needed pain meds long with my vaginal delivery (had a bad tear).... with the c/s i only took pain meds during the day for about a week - then another week i still took them at night so i would sleep better/less pain when moving around in bed.... after that, i didn't need them anymore.
I am 8 days post c-section. While in the hospital I was on precocet and prescription motrin. They informed me they wouldn't give me anything that wasn't safe for the babies. If I took medicine right before pumping, the NICU nurses told me to just write it on the bottles. However, I was not a good patient and did not take my pain medicine very well. While in the hospital, I would take a percocet and 1 motrin after my morning pumping. I would then take another precocet and motrin if my pain level increased by late afternoon. After my midnight pumping, I took two percocets to sleep. Since coming home, I have only been taking the Motrin. I noticed that my pain level increased, but I think it has a lot to do with all of the running around I have been doing (visiting the boys in the NICU). I try to stagger the Motrin and if I need to take medicine, I take it immediately after a pumping. My doctor told me that I am not permitted to drive or do normal activities for 6 weeks.
It was totally fine! I actually didn't take any pain meds until about 36 hours after my csection and I really only took them because they kept asking me and I was afraid some sudden pain was going to start up or something. The first time you stand up, post c section is scary and yes painful but not that bad. It's more fear of the unknown I think! Coughing or sneezing, not gonna lie, will hurt! Other then that, I thought the csection and recovery was really easy. You have to take it easy, follow rules on not lifting in the beginning but you will make it through. I only had pain pills for a few days after I went home and I saved them for when I felt I really needed them, if I had done too much or whatever. I was really scared too, but it will all be fine!!!
Good luck!
