How do you interact w/DC in a backcarry?

I never really carried DS in a back carry much b/c w/my APLX I was able to front carry him until well over 30lbs, so by the time I really started thinking about doing a BC he was wanting to be down running around most of the time.  With two, I'm thinking I may need/want to use a BC a little more with DD, but one of the things I love most about wearing them is how easy it is to interact with them right there in front of me.  It seems like that gets lost in a BC.

So, let's say you're wearing DC in a BC while grocery shopping as an example.  How do you interact with him/her?  How do you talk to him/her and engage him/her?

  • DD and I chat about everything around us.  For example at the dog park we are walking between the lake shore and the airport.  We chat about our silly dog (who likes to swim so much she jumps in the freezing lake) other dogs, the wind sock and where the wind is blowing, if the airplanes are all in their "houses"...and the list goes on.

Before she could talk I chatted to her about everything that we were doing, even if it was just "ok now we have the eggs, lets go find some yogurt"   Some people would give me odd looks or even answer me if they thought I was asking a question, but DD was enjoying it and soaking it all in.

ETA: we also have a mirror that I can velcro on to the shoulder strap so I can see her if I need too.  I used that a lot in the summer when we used to go hiking a lot.

That's really cool!  Where did you find it?  Is it something you rigged up yourself or a ready-made contraption?

  • Atticus and I dance, sing, and talk about everything! Well...as much "talking" as you can expect from a 4 month old...

We sometimes go to art galleries, and I'll tell him about the artist, what I think of the painting or sculpture. We talk about the birds singing, or the clouds in the sky...there are a couple parks by our house and we'll go on the swings...

  • When wearing DS, whether it's a back or front carry, I chat with him about what we are doing.  For example, if I'm grocery shopping I ask him questions or tell him what I'm looking for, etc; or if I'm at home I sometimes sing to him or stand in front of a mirror for a few minutes and interact with him in the mirror.
