Flat Heads No Matter What I Do...

My older child had brachycephaly, torticollis. She was in PT for 6 months and when we started it, basically had very little core strength. I had been really bad about making her do tummy time, and boy....did we pay the price. She was in a helmet for 6 months and as 13 months when she crawled for the first time.

With the twins, we have been diligent about tummy time. They are only on their back in the crib when sleeping, or in the bouncer (which I try to limit since I know the bouncer can be a culprit). The poor babies have so much tummy time that they are probably planning some sort of revolt. But regardless, their heads are still showing major flat spots. His head is pretty flat in the back, and she has a flat spot on the side.

We have tried the tricks....putting them on different ends of the changer, moving their position in the crib (well, except for him since his crib is elevated). We switch feeding arms, use the play mat, the boppy...everything. Any advice?

  • Have you tried this?

I would use it in teh car seat, the play mat, the bouncy seat, etc...

One of my boys still has a bit of flat head, but I think that's just the shape of his head (like his dad's!) and also from how he was in utero...his identical brother has a pretty round head.  I did the same with both and one just has a rounder head...so sometimes I think their heads are just a certain way.

  • No advice because one of my girls was born with what I think is a flat head.  I've tried all the same things.  Even though out Pedi says most often it gets better by 6-9 months, I'm not waiting.  I made an appt with a specialist at Children Hospital to get it checked out.  DH thinks I'm crazy but I swear it's causing torticollis.  And I bet she needs a helmet. Have you made an appt to get her checked out?

  • I totally sympathize.  My DS has mild tort and severe plagio that started inutero and got worse after birth due to the tort.  I am convinced that at least one of the twins will have the same issue but at least I know what to look out for this time and how to treat it.  In addition to the head pillow have you tried a sleep repositioner?  We used a mat with velcro and two wedges and put DS to sleep on his good side.  I think it helped a little but we also started late.  Everyone told me that flat spots that start inutero are harder to resolve so that may be why repositioning isn't working as well as you would hope.  Keep at it, I think you LOs are still a bit too young for a helmet.  We had to delay DS until he could hold his head straight.  Good Luck!
