Babies: 0 - 3 Months

NO!!! My baby has COLIC :(

Ok, I could make this a funny post but for real....this is hard!  My baby has colic and it's kicking in high gear.  It started late afternoon around 4pm.  He cried for about two hours off and on.

I think I cried longer than he.  This new mommy thing is hard work!  I feel so helpless when he cries.  I can handle him crying but when he sounds like he's in pain it's hurts me to the core.

What are some coping skills you use to soothe your baby during these spells?  How do you cope when they have a spell.  I have him on GasX, and Mylocon drops.  He's on Enfamil Gentle Ease formula.  The doctor even told me I could use Karo syrup in his formula as well as Prune Juice to help him poop and with the gas which does help.

I understand that Colicy babies are healty babies and there's no cure for it but there has to be some better/other was to get through this. He'll be 7 weeks tomorrow and I know Colic last about 3 months.

TIA

Seriously, there needs to be a support group for parents of colicy babies.

  • Colic sucks!  There is no other way to say it.  I've been living the colic hell for what seems like forever and she is only 9wks 4days(?).  This has been the worst weeks in my life and I cannot wait until it's over.  So, I have no words of encouragement.  Unless someone has experienced colic they have no idea what you are going through.  That being said, was last night his first night of crying?  Colic usually kicks in before 7wks??

If you haven't read Happiest Baby on the Block, you need to.  You need to swadle and get the 5S's going...they work wonder!  Some moms swear by gripe water, but it only helps us sometimes.  My daughter has sever reflux as well just like many colicky babies.  Is it possible he does?

I am so sorry you are going through this.  I always say I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy...

  • I have to apologize too... I have no words of encouragement either. DS is 5 weeks and I have been going through the same thing... hopefully you have a very understanding husband/spouse/friend, anyone to let you vent or complain to... other than that... I have no advice.. I feel your pain...
  • hang in there. it sucks but time flies. my first had colic. but, i have to say, i dont think your child has colic. i might be wrong, but it usually starts with in the first 2-3 weeks of life. we actually hit a turning point around 8 weeks and it went away around 11 weeks or so. it usually goes away after 3 months...also, we didnt do much for it. i didnt like giving too much to such a young baby. you could try good start formula. that did wonders for her. enfamil is harsher- even the gentlease. good start is a little easier to digest. from my exp, the mylicon, gripe water, chamomile, really didnt do much. time will heal.

Why do you think her child doesn't have colic? She said that her child is almost 7 weeks old now, but she never mentioned when it started. According to my pediatrician, colic peaks around 6 weeks, which is how old her baby is.

OP, hang in there! My DS has colic and reflux and we started seeing a big change in him around 8-9 weeks. On our worst day, DS screamed for nine hours straight! My pediatrician recommended that we put DS on a probiotic drop and it really helped. (He's on Zantac for his reflux, too.) We found that holding him while bouncing on an exercise ball worked well to soothe him.

  • I feel your pain. Ours is on Axid for acid reflux. It seems to help him a little bit with the pain. As a pp said, read/watch The Happiest Baby on the Block. We bought the dvd, it has really helped us! DS is about 6 weeks so I am hoping we are halfway there!!
  • right there with you.  started at 3 weeks and still going strong.  it is awful.  does the baby have reflux at all, or some sort of allergy?

when I brought her in for colic, they looked at her bumm which indicated an allergy.  they tested her stool and it had blood.  so I went from BF to FF on nutramigen.  it was a life saver.  she is still colicky, but it has eased a bit.  nothing helps.  the only thing that helps me is wine, lots and lots, and lots of wine.  (some beer slipped in as well!!)

having my daily dose as i type!

  • I'm sorry.  I can empathize.  I ditto the suggestions about the 5 S's and the wine.
  • Oh I hear ya on the colic.  I never even thought about before LO was born.  It was so nice actually going back to work at 8 weeks pp because I had time away from an unhappy screaming baby.  However now at 3 months he really is soooo much better than before.  Hang in there!  Bump often :)
