I have to say I just adored the therapist. She was incredible!
Brooke had a blast because we were in what was essentially a huge playground in the middle of the hospital. The therapist and I talked, she observed, while Brooke played.
We discussed everything I could think of that I was concerned about. Many things she really didn't think were real issues - such as the hair washing (apparently Brooke is afraid of the soap getting in her eyes - she told the therapist that but has never told me). The food thing - she may not eat some mushy foods but does eat some, so SPD there is unlikely.
However, she said when it comes to the clothing and scratching, etc., she definitely has the SPD from a tactile perspective. She thinks it would only really be necessary to see her once a month at this point, and wants to start the brushing therapy.
She was very honesty, not pushy. I didn't feel like she was trying to explain things away or trying to make everything fit into a tidy little SPD box, if that makes sense. I felt she was being real with me, which was great.
Something else interesting though, she wants me to have her adenoids checked. I'd commented on how hard it is to wake Brooke up in the morning, that Taylor is usually happy as can be when I wake her, even if she's up a bit, but despite the relatively early bed time, Brooke is just a bear. She asked if she snores, which she does. She asked if she's a mouth breather, which I know I've seen her do when I pay attention. And she thought she sounded nasal. She thinks her crankiness in the morning may be do to lack of quality sleep. Who knew?!
So thank you again to everyone who led me this direction. I am very excited to see where this leads us, and hope to be able to bring my child some comfort in her own skin.
Re: Brooke's SPD evaluation was yesterday.
I'm glad it went well!
I actually thought of you last night when I went in to check on my DD. She had her old footed pj's on. When I took her to the bathroom, she started itching all over like crazy. I remembered at that instant that there were certain clothes that used to drive DD crazy. It seemed to be the clothing that was not 100% cotton, but had the fire retardant stuff on them. Her doctor thought she might have a sensitivity to certain clothing, so we avoid them all together.
I'm just curious what happens with the clothing and if it's all clothing.
Also, about the adenoids. My DD had severely enlarged adenoids this year. She was itching all over as one of the symptoms. The itching has stopped and her sleeping is better now that the pollen count is down. Could your DD have allergies?
I'll have to check regarding the fire retardant thing, but given certain articles of clothing - like socks and tights, etc., I'm not sure that's it. Or not entirely it at least. I'm sure it could contribute!
She does have allergies, yes. Both girls have had severe allergies since early on. They've been on zyrtec regularly for as long as I can remember. Periodically I will try to stop giving it to them, but then they start coughing and sniffling like crazy again.
The itching with her is pretty constant though, and has been for a long time. Well, I don't know if it's itching actually. She scratches all the time, but does that necessarily mean she really has an itch? Could it be some other irritation and that's just how she responds to it?
I don't know, but I hope to get more answers as we go along.
ETA - And thank you for thinking of us! It feels good to have some support in this.
You're killing me, EK, lol. That's a possibility, I guess. The only way to know for sure would be to switch her to a different med, I suppose. I'd like to try Taylor too because her skin is just so horrible and I see that mentioned there too.
Claritin, I guess you're up!
Glad it went well and that you feel you got something out of it. We had our 2nd OT appointment yesterday, and the brushing therapy worked so well that she thinks my son's tactile defensiveness is all but gone. She doesn't even need to see him anymore. He went from complaining daily about how clothing felt to getting dressed without a problem (well, he still has minor sock issues) and wearing the outfit all day. We did the brushing pretty intensively for 4 weeks.
Good luck with the follow-up appointments. You'll get some great tips for things to do at home in addition to the sessions. Hopefully your DD will respond well!
I'm sorry! I guess I just like to look at all the possibilities. I'll shut up now!
