Re: hospital bills- how many?

  • Probably depends on where you live, what your insurance is and how you delivered. We received enough that we are on an interest free payment plan of about $300 a month. Yes we have insurance but a unplanned c section and five days in the hospital add up.

  • I've gotten three...One for baby, and two for me (why two, I don't know).  The anastesiolgist had his own bill too, so that's four, but that last one didn't come directly from the hospital for some wierd reason.  We're applying for assistance in paying them, so hopefully the people there know more about that than me!

If you've only racked up $400, there will be more, sorry to say.

  • I'm sure it varies.  I got a bill from the hospital, one from the anesthesiologist for the epidural, one from the pediatrician who saw DD in the hospital, and a couple for DD from the hospital.  I made payments in advance to my OB so no bills received from them.

  • I had to pre-pay my OB for the delivery (~$350). I just paid the bill for my anesthesiologist ($460) and a random lab bill ($8). I haven't gotten a bill from the hospital yet.

  •  I have good insurance. When I first started seeing my OB, they ran a check on my insurance and gave me a paper saying that everything was covered. (I see an in network doctor.)

I was surprised to get a bill for about $100 from the hospital. I logged in on-line and saw the reason code was because I had a "private room." In actuality, all of the rooms are labor + delivery in one room. There are no roommates anymore. I thought that was kind of an odd way for the plan to look at it, but I'm not going to complain since that's apparently a small bill.

The bill would have been less, except we were still waiting on the doctor to perform the circumcision. So, we were charged for another day because we weren't discharged early in the morning.

  • Expect a bill from the hospital, a separate bill from each doctor (OB, anesthesiologist, pediatrician...), and potentially bills from the lab and pharmacy...  There may be separate bills for you and LO.

  • Other than 125 for a lactation consultant and 50 in copays, we have received bills for about 600 for lab work for C being in NICU needing blood cultures done. I dont think we are done receiving bills, we received the invoice for the NICU stay but not the final bill after what insurance is going to pay.

You won't get any if you delivered in an MTF.  I delivered in a civilian hospital and got a bill for $50 for the stay- tricare pays everything but $14ish/day in the room.  The EOBs showed that between my stay, emergency c-section, and routine care for my LO, our bills would have been well over 18k.

  • I have insurance and I have gotten two bills for LO (hospital, NICU dr).  For LO it's going to run about $600.00.  I have gotten for me a bill from hospital, Anesthesiologist, OB's Office, and for labs.  I have to pay $2,400 max out of pocket before I am fully covered.  All of my bills after insurance equals $2,385.00.  This is better than the close to 17K I would have had to pay without insurance for both me and LO.

  • So far: My room & board, baby's room & board, OB for delivery, pedi checks, hearing test, all her and my labs, and part 2 of newborn screen. I'm sure there will be more!

  • Totally depends.  I only got one bill from the hospital which covered all hospital related costs, my OB, the anesthesiologist, costs for DD, etc.  I appreciate that our hospital consilidated it all that way so we only had one bill to look at.

  • I haven't added it all up yet but before delivery we paid $5700 to our OB (we were only responsible for $1860 though) and then one of the boys had bloodwork everyday for a week cause of his jaundice which was $80 per lab and $100 per day for the BilliBlanket (for 5 days).  The anesthesiologist sent me a bill for re-dosing my epidural in the section room... and then we have the actual Hospital Bill stay which is misplaced right now.. thanks for the reminder lol

  • Zero. My copay for the year is 100 euros so after we had that back in May, everything else is covered. I'm super thankful that at least one major thing is cheaper living abroad than back in the States.

Side note though: I had to have an ultrasound while I was in the States visiting my mom in August and it was $740! I forgot the crazy price difference of medical services, ours here are 30 euros or $50.
