Question for those FF from the start

Just a general question... if you don't breastfeed at all from the start, does your milk ever really "come in"?  Last pregnancy i breastfed for the first 2 weeks before going to formula, but remember being so engorged as i was waiting for the milk to dry up.  I am not sure if I will give breastfeeding a try this time around, but was curious if I don't attempt at all, will i still be engorged for a period of time?

Re: Question for those FF from the start

  • Yes. The majority of the time your milk comes in whether you use it or not.

  • Yes, I never breastfed and you will be engorged and hurting by 3 days pp. It will last for about 3 days and then you will leak for some time. Just make sure not to touch or rub them, lots of ice will be your friend!

  • yes it does come in. it took about 2 weeks to come in after LO was born and was engorged for about 5 days, leaked for about a month.

  • YES! Cabbage leaves will do wonders for it though.
  • Definitely! Mine came in about 4 days PP and was only REALLY bad for about 48 hours. But then I had to use breast pads for about a month.
  • I was engorged by day 4. My chest got really hot and painful. It was really bad for the first 2 days, but then felt a lot better. Within 4 days I was back to normal. I never had any leaking.
  • I barely had any milk come in.  I never felt a let down, my boobs were never engorged or hurting, and I leaked exactly twice and then it was only a few drops.  When I pumped, I would get around 1 ounce a day.

So milk doesn't always come in.

  • I'm on my 12th day PP and only had one day where my breasts felt hard.  I kept sports bras on as soon as I realized I wasn't going to BF (I had some complications after birth.).  When my chest hurt, I put ice packs on them.  I never leaked and wore pads just in case I did.  I am not sure if I was going to have issues with milk production, or if my milk didn't come in because I didn't use it.

  • Started leaking at 3 days PP (incidentally the first night I actually got to spend with my crying baby in the room - he was in special care since the first night)

Had one or two times where spots on my boobs would feel hard (never the whole boob) and used ice packs on those hard spots. Leaked until probably about 6 or 7 weeks pp.

  • oh god yes it did. and it hurt. lol. it came in on the 3rd day. i was sooooo engorged. i was a 34B pre-pregnancy, went to a 36C during pregnancy, and when my milk came in i was wearing a 38D and popping out of it. lol. i looked like a pornstar. it took a few days to dry up. now i have my tinies back - only saggier. lol.

  • I had a super low supply with DD1...and milk came in around day 6. I tried pumping too, but it didn't work very well. Anyway, this time around I wasn't even going to attempt. Milk came in around day 6 again. I'm leaking a little, but it wasn't really painful.
