Placenta Question

When are you finding out about the position of the placenta??  Some are anterior, some are more posterior.  Is the doc telling you this, or are you finding out at the u/s?  Also what does it mean if your placenta is more anterior vs posterior?  Sorry, these are probably stupid questions but I'm a first time Mom.  Thanks ladies!!

Re: Placenta Question

  • I haven't found out which I have yet, but I will be asking at our big u/s.

Anterior means that it is toward your front, near your belly button. Posterior means that it is toward your back.

Anterior placentas create more padding, and therefore moms who have them sometimes have to wait longer to feel the baby.

Other than that, I am not sure there is much of a difference. The main thing they look for with placenta placement is that it is not covering any part of your cervical opening, which would be placenta previa. HTH!

  • The tech told me I had an anterior placenta at our NT scan at 13 weeks.  It doesn't mean anything for the baby in terms of health or risk or whatever - babies just hang out in different positions and one of them causes the placenta to be in the front.

  • I was told I had an anterior placenta at my NT Scan too. It definitely has made a difference in the amount of movement I can/can't feel! Other than that there is a very small chance the placenta has attached itself to my c/s scar tissue and if it has, I will have to have a hysterectomy when I deliver...which would totally suck. But my doctor said she's only had that happen once in all her years of practice so I'm not too worried. We'll just keep an eye on it as my uterus grows and stretches.

  • I was told I have an anterior placenta at my gender scan, I thought this was odd because I can feel the baby sometimes and the tech was surprised that I can feel. She showed me where the placenta was so I think she is correct but I will see what they say at the anatomy scan (january 6th)

  • I am anterior also... Tech said that as long as it was on my cervix, which is wasn't, I was fine.  I might have felt our little girl a few times, but not sure.  Though, she is in there!

  • I have felt movement since 13 weeks.  My OB said (at my 15 week appt) that I must have a posterior placenta..

But when I went for my elective u/s last Thursday to determine if we were having a boy/girl, the u/s tech told me it was anterior.  I do know though what I have been feeling is movement.  So it isn't impossible to feel it early even with an anterior placenta.
