Worried about weight gain while hypothyroid

I'm just inching to the end of my first trimester, but I'm really worried I haven't gained enough weight.  I eat what seems like all the time, and I sit at the same weight or fluctuate up 3 lbs then I'm back down again.  I have had minimal MS, and only threw up twice from it so keeping food down has not been an issue.

I'm hypothyroid, and my doc immediately upped my meds at our first visit although my levels read fine.  Thyroid hormone usually drops during pregnancy so I'm told (and all I've read), so it was a preemptive measure.

Part of me is worried that the up in dosage is what's caused me to essentially flat line in weight gain.  Another part thinks maybe I should just eat more.  And the rest says everything is ok...

My next dr visit is Thursday, and I'll address this then.

Any other hypothyroid gals out there experiencing similar issue?  Or ladies w/ weight concerns in general?

  • I don't have hypothyroid, but I haven't gained any weight yet, and I'm farther along than you. My dr. doesn't seem concerned. Definitely ask the doc on Thursday though.

  • I had thyroid cancer, so essentially I don't have a thyroid any more.  I am on Synthroid and as soon as I got pregnant I called my Endocrinologist.  I have been getting my levels checked every 4 weeks since I found out I was pregnant and my levels have dropped scary low!  They keep upping my dose to try and get the levels back up.  I have gained more weight than I should for the 1st tri but I think a lot of that is due to my levels being so low.

If I were you I would call my endo, since OBs really don't fully understand the thyroid issues as well as endos.  You should definitely be getting your levels checked.

  • I am hypothyroid and my levels have stayed pretty consistent thus far. I have lost about 10lbs from my pre-pregnancy weight and they are not concerned at this point. Most people make up for it later on.

  • I am hypothyroid.  Actually you are not supposed to gain a lot of weight in the 1st trimester.  My doctor checks my levels before he fools with my medicine and i have to go back every two months to have them checked.  So far he hasn't had to up them.  I only gained one pound in 1st tri and my doctor was pleased.  You will make up for it in 2nd tri.  I would have your endo check your levels again since it has been a while.  I think you are probably fine.

  • Relieved to know that some of you haven't gained weight either.   But I AM getting my levels checked.  I guess I didn't make that very clear w/ my OP.

My first visit was just 4 weeks ago, with the lab work 1 week prior to that, so I've had my levels checked recently.  I've also alerted my endo and he said, based on the OB practice I'm going to, to just have them continue to monitor my levels since I would be going there so often.  They are forwarding my endo my labwork so he'll have a record of it all.   My next level check is scheduled for my January appointment, but as I said I'll bring it up to my dr on Thursday and we'll see if they have me checked again this week.

  • I am hypothyroid as well and will have my levels checked every six weeks throughout my pregnancy. So far, everything looks good and they haven't adjusted my medication. I haven't gained any weight yet, either. I think that is fairly normal. Good luck to you!
