carseat torture

My LO *hates* his carseat.  Consequently he cries in the car about 25% of the time.  Which breaks my heart.  Sometimes I'm in tears too by the time we get to our destiation.  It is torture for both of us.  Anyone else going thru anything similar?  Anyone got any advice?

Re: carseat torture

  • maybe put him in his carseat when you're at the house, to get him used to it slowly, in a place he feels safe in (home) ... ? then hopefully he'll gradually change how he feels about riding in it in the car.

  • Could you put some kind of toys in his carseat to distract him? I have these hanging on DD's carseat and when I drive, it makes them sway and jingle and she absolutely loves it. When she's fussy in her carseat I'll just shake them and she starts laughing.

  • Be happy it's only 25% of the time.  Abigail cries the entire time, every time.  My mom is 20 minutes away and her specialists are 35 minutes away.  I dread going to either place.  I've tried everything...

  • my dd hates it too. she screams the whole time shes in it. Once we even had to pull over and take her out she was getting so worked up. one thing that ive found to work 50/50 is putting her window down partially.
  • No advice my LO hates it too. I feel like I have tried everything too. She gets really worked up too. Even if we stop and console her she will get worked up again. It does help if someone can sit in the backseat and hold a paci in her mouth or feed her a bottle. But there is times when there isn't someone to sit back there with her.

  • A teaspoon of very lightly sweetened Chamomile tea before the car ride does always has done the trick for both of my boys.  I think the angle can make it tough if they are a little gassy.

  • I'm sure you've tried the following, but this is what helps me. Honestly though, she usually loves the car so I'm not sure if I'll be much help. I make sure to feed her and burp her right before putting her in the carseat. I sit her on the floor in the house and if she's fussy I pick up the carrier and start walking with it. Usually the swaying calms her down. If she's still fussy in the car I turn up the music and the loud noise usually zonks her out. I'm so sorry your LO hates the car. That must be so stressful. Good luck and hopefully it gets better!
