I'm curious if other families have a traditional main dish they serve each Christmas. Part of my husband's family insists that turkey is the most traditional and the only thing they'd make. Personally I prefer ham, but I like turkey too. Either way, I don't have a tradition set in my mind, so I am curious what others do.

Re: Clicky POLL: Traditional main dish for Christmas?
This is going to sound strange, but at my grandma's we do ham and turkey finger sandwiches. My grandma has been making them since before I was born - she grinds up the cooked meat w/mayo, onion, pickles, s&p, cuts a hole in the top of dinner rolls, and stuffs them. It's totally a tradition, and she won't make them for anything but christmas.
My ILs do turkey because MIL is allergic to ham.
I come from an Italian Family. While we did not do the traditional fish christmas dinners, we do have a pasta dish (meatless) with meatballs on the side ever Christmas Eve. PERIOD.
So much so, I will be making meatballs myself this year.
Growing up, Christmas dinner was never a huge deal. I mean, I'm certain we had turkey and everything that goes along with it SOME years, but it wasn't a regular thing at all. Christmas Eve was actually a bigger deal in our house and we almost always ate chili.
It's been a long time since we've been with extended family on the actual holiday of Christmas. Since everyone is so far away, I really prefer to be home on Christmas and am super excited that this year it will be all four of us for the first time. I really feel like a true FAMILY this year with Cameron here finally and can't wait to get started making some of our own traditions :-) - I know, how sappy, hehe!

My family does a full turkey dinner every.single.year.
My husbands family varies. If I host I usually make a prime rib. If my SIL hosts it's usually some kind of pork or fresh ham. If my MIL hosts it could be turkey or beef - usually whatever is on sale.
My family always did turkey, but I think it is just too soon after Thanksgiving, so I have been experimenting with different ideas. Last year I made a ham, but it felt too much like Easter, so this year I am going to make this:

I can't remember from being little, but in recent years we've grilled. My dad will do steaks or dh will smoke ribs or something along those lines.
This year my mom doesn't feel like doing a huge meal so we are all going to bring a variety of appetizers and just munch all day.
My Mom USED to do Turkey when I was a kid but then I complained that it was too much after Thanksgiving. So then she switched to ham. However, my Mutti (grandmother) always makes a Pork Roast, too- so I guess we have two-
Ham & Pork Roast.
That's what my MIL makes for New Year's Eve! A TON of them and Pozole and the whole family comes in and out throughout the day and chows down! SO good and such a nice tradition to look forward to every year.
Christmas Eve - lamb with DH's family. They are from Norway and we always have lamb. I hate it (its not chops but weird lamb ribs with no meat on them and are very salty) so whatever family member is hosting will usually make a ham too.
Christmas Day - full turkey and ham dinner cooked by my mom. Our Canadian Thanksgiving is in early October so we are ready for turkey again by Christmas.
It is my belief that all holidays should be celebrated with turkey. My love of turkey knows no limits. I could eat it every night of the year and never get tired of it!
ETA: I'm making this face
at all of you who say it's too soon for turkey ater Thanksgiving. OMG, that's like saying it's too soon to win the lottery again.
lol @ lottery. too funny.
Growing up we did pork, but now my house does Christmas day.
I make pierogies, stuffed cabbage, kielbsa w/sauerkraut and we do small ham. Slovak/Polish Christmas!
